WANTED: Honest, stock performance averages

I have a very simple, straightforward request. I would like to know what are the average performance specs for the 4th Gen. Infiniti automatic that would be expected with a "non-professional" driver behind the wheel.

I would like to know expected group averages, rather than anecdotal, individual results which often fall under the category of "bragging rights."

In other words, I am less interested in the results that have appeared in a Road & Track/Car & Driver/Motor Trend road test, and more interested in the results that an amatuer driver, and newbie to this car might expect if he or she drove a totally stock I30 on a straight, flat track.

I realize that there are many, individual variations in how they are measured, where, and by whom. It is because of these variations that I'm asking for averages.

Just like there is an expected average for gas mileage, can anyone tell me what is the expected average for things like 0-60mph, 20-40mph, 60-0 stopping distance, 0-60ft, and so on.

Having these numbers will help other I30 drivers benchmark their present and future mods.

You really will not find alot of information hanging out in the I30/I35 forums you know that. You have to visit the 5 gen maximas + 4 gen + 3rd gen and general maxima forums and read the sticky threads. The moderators put them there for us to get useful information about our cars that have been asked repeatedly. The I30/I35 are essentially maximas anyway, with just extra goodies, so everything that is performance related to a maxima you should read the maxima forums. They are alot more active than us here in the I30/I35 forums. Usually when I need to find anything about modifications or performance I just browse the max forums. Most of the people in here are more laid back and usually when you ask questions about performance upgrades, it takes awhile for you to get a response. IMO look around in the other sections and you will find answers faster.

The 1/4 and 1/8 mile forums will give you a good idea. The time slips forum is a good one as well.

But, to give a short answer to your question about 1/4 mile times, I would have to say from what I have seen at the track in real life and the forums here, a stock 4th gen Max/ I30 auto tranny would be any where from 15.5-16.5 in the 1/4 mile.

Go to the 1/4 mile forum and read through the last 20 pages and you should find a good cross section of times. From my time spent on the org, my educated guess would be a stock auto I30 will run on the average of a 15.6

The reason I came here instead of the 4th Gen Max's is because both the curb weight and gross vehicle weight of the I30 is more than the average Max...even a GLE.

Contrary to some odd belief, the I30 contains NO extra weight than an equally equiped Max... No way what so ever.

The curb weight of a 1998 Maxima GLE automatic is 3085lbs, while the curb weight of a 1998 Infiniti I30 automatic is 3150lbs.

Source: Edmunds.com

So, where is the extra 65lbs coming from?

What's the average 0-60mph and 0-60ft times for the I30?

I have another question related to struts and springs. What impact, in terms of acceleration times, does installing new struts/shocks and lowering springs have?

I'm assuming the car would be quicker given the reduced shift in weight.

Not at all... The only things that in I30 could get or came with that a maxima could not was:

1. LSD.
2. Fuzzy a,b, and c pillars (instead of plastic).
3. Rear head rests.
4. Leather wrapped ebrake handle (instead of plastic).
5. Map pockects on the backs of both front seats.
6. Electronic fuel filler release (instead of lever on the floor).
7. Adjustable front head rests.

That is it... not much at all. All of the major options and features were shared by both.

Well, I can tell you right now it is NOT from extra sound deadening materials, as we got what the Max got.

What trim was the I30... base, leather, or t?

The only thing I can think of is the extra weight might come from the different sheet metal?

You do know the SE 95-99 maxima in auto, fully loaded has more weight than the 95-99 GLE. SE has heavier suspension (sport suspension components), the wing, heavier wheels, (16s vs 17s), fog lights, side skirts, different front bumpers, and all the power options like (heated seats, power front seats blah blah blah....My cousin had a SE maxima 97 and I had a 96 GLE and both of ours were fully equipped minus the interior wood, and his (car factory specs) weighed more lbs than my GLE. So basically, I think a SE Auto maxima and a I30 should weigh the same especially if you have a base model I30. ALSO, driver weight can easily compensate the extra weight the I30 has. SO, if a SE maxima weighs like 10 pounds less than a I30 but the max driver weights 220lbs and the I30 driver only weights 150-170 lbs then right there is the weight offset.
