Need your help with decision on an I30

I have been looking for an i30 for some time now and i came across this one on autotrader. The guy was selling it for just below blue book vale at retail so that would be what a dealer would be able to sell it for. Well he was not going to come down at all. Well just recently i looked on autotrader and there the car still is but now for $5800. Im gona link the listing just so all of you can tell me weither it is a good deal or not. 96 touring 5 speed 130k miles white with black leather. Reason i want the i30 is for the 5 speed Vlsd for when the car gets the Vq35 swapped in. Thanks Again for the help in advance. Tom

black/black is very rare in 5sp. I'd go for it, but I try to get it for $5K, at most 5300.

If you can get him down to 5000 I'd jump on it.

Sorry to hijack your thread but I'm new and can't post a new thread.

My question for all you I30 experts is:

What would be considered a fair price for the following I30's?

97 I30, Black/Tan w/113k miles, fully loaded

99 I30, Silver/Tan w/98k miles, fully loaded

Both are A/T and not the touring models.

Also, what common concerns should I be on the lookout for when viewing the vehicles? I think the ABS brakes and starter are common problems, right? What else should I be concerned with?

Appreciate and response and assistance in advance!!!!

It cool i dont mind you posting. But just look on Kbb.com or edmunds for pricing on the car. Some people do trade in + retail and then divid by 2 for a good price to pay for them. Others jsut go by whatever is the private party value on them. Hope that helped.

Since the models have roughly the same mileage, the value should be about the same. I would not pay more than 7500 for the 97 and 8000 for the 99. The only problems to watch out for are the knock sensor on both and the coil packs on the 99.

If you are seriously considering the 99 make sure it is NOT the cali spec model as those came with an extra pre cat in one of the exhaust manifolds and is a real damper on hp.

Wow I'm getting a STEAL on both cars then!!! The cars having asking prices in the $5-6k range. Have yet to run a carfax on them but sounds ok from communications w/the sellers.

So besides the KS (how do I chk for its condition?) there are NO other expensive problems that I should look out for, like ABS & airbag sensors, and other expensive to replace parts?

Lastly how durable are the A/T trannys? I've driven a couple of 4th gen Max's and they all had the "kick" on 1/2 and 2/3 shifts, which made me pass on them immediately. I just sold my accord which had these problems so I don't want to deal w/the same gremlins again.

Thanks mymax97! I chk all the online sources already but I want to chk in w/the org. members for consistency. Gotta read up the faq's on the I30's since I was mostly concentrating on looking for a max.

Well , the only way to check for a bad KS is to check the ecu for the code... Its all in the 4th gen stickies, but regardless the KS easy to replace even if it is bad. The ABS and air bag sensors in these cars are rock solid. A few guys have had problems with them but nothing to indicate a wide spread problem like the KS. THe auto tranny in these cars are rock solid... in fact, believe it or not, but on these cars the auto is actually more realiable than the manuals.

Ok that sounds good. I just read a thread on 4th gen max where it detailed how to diagnose the KS and coil packs so I have that covered. Glad to hear that the "expensive" sensors aren't usually problematic as well.

Regarding the A/T's, should I be concerned and pass if it kicks while shifting, or its more or less a nuisance and don't need to be concerned with it? Would a tranny fluid flush resolve the kick or its a tell-tale sign for bad things to come? I've driven mostly hondas where its tranny kicks are commonplace, just want to be sure that the Max/I30's don't have the same issues.

yeah, i know what you mean about the honda trannys. I used to have a 92 acura vigor auto, and god damn did that thing buck in everygear... it never gave me any problems though.

As far as the I30/Max auto trannys go I would not worry about it at all. Mine has 100k on it it gives crips shifts in every gear. I mean you can feel it shift, but I would not call it a kick at all.

The car is not supposed to be one of those 'gearless' trannys that you cannot feel shift at all like a GM or something. And a tranny service can help eliminate any hard shifting.

If you test drive them and it feels like it is lunging in every gear, then I would pass. But I doubt that will be the case unless the previous owner did a bunch of tranny drops.
