2000 i30 question???
hey whats up guys,
im having the "BRAKE" light and "BATTERY" light come on in the mornings when i first start the car. it stays on for about 2 minutes of driving then goes away.
i have a brand new battery installed and the brakes were checked out by my mechanic and he says there is absolutely nothing wrong with them.
anybody ever had this problem? any help would be appreciated.
thanks.

well....
I just came back from a 80 mile trip and almost didnt make it home. my lights started flickering on and off (mind you its pitch black out here in Birmingham, Al.). I pulled into my parking spot and the car shut off, I had to push it the rest of the way. I'm going to get the battery checked out tomorrow and also the charging system. Hopefully its not the alternator and the battery is shot. If its the battery then I can grab the Optima Yellow top and throw that in. Hope thats going to work and its nothing major.

thanks for your help.
the car started up right away this morning without any hesitation. the downside is that the "brake" and "battery" light are still on.
hope this doesnt turn out bad.
does anyone have an idea on how much replacing a alternator would be? how hard is it to replace? might be a nice DIY.
thanks again for your help.

Should not take more than an hour to do. Might as well change the belts while you are in there too.

ive order dozens of things from them, great equipment at great prices and you get to see what you order b4 you order it.
another option i use to use all the time is buy it from local pepboys or autozone and its llifetime warranty. Anytime the thing goes out free replacement. I went through 4 in 4 years with my altima i had and it was because i was overruning it with my system. With typical loads itll last well beyond 1 in 4 years....
as far as install goes here it is word for word from the FSM
it shows to remove from bottom of the car...
1. Remove Engine underover RH
2. Remove side inspection cover RH
3. Loosen belt idler pulley
4. Remove drive belt
5. Remove A/C compressor mounting bolts (four)
6. Slide A/C compressor foward
7. Disconnect alternator harness connector
8. Remove alternator upper bolt and lower bolt
Installation
To install, reverse the removal process.
i would send you the fsm pages but its kinda pointless as theres not really a picture of what to do. Ive never changed the alternator for an I30 or Max so i dunno if u "have" to follow all those steps but thats what the fsm says. Good luck to ya!

got quoted at $663 to replace the alternator and the belt. sounds a lil steep to me so i going to try around and see what other shops have to offer. from reading the link that i30ds provided, it seems like a pretty complicated job for your novice diy'er (me).

thats exactly what i told the mechanic. ive seen a few rebuilts online for no more than $150-$175. he was charging me $400 just for the alternator and $30 for the belt. being sarcastic i asked him if it was brand new and he said well no that would cost more. i just simply walked out.
*birmingham sucks when it comes to auto repair. i moved down here about 3 months ago from queens, ny. damn i miss ny. would have cost no more than $300 for parts and labor. this place sucks! ! !*

i just wanted to thank you guys for all the help....
had it done today for $350 including parts, labor, the serpentine belt and the power steering belt. this is also with a lifetime warranty on all parts(alternator and belts).
not too bad if you ask me.
just wanted to say thanks again.

Took me forever to figure it out.
The alternator cost me about $140. The labor was free since I did it myself.
Anyways, my car acted the same way as the original poster's I30 did. Mine had about 130K on the clock.
