Suspension Problem Question

Suspension Problem Question
I have an 01 I30 with 34K miles. When it's just me or with one other person in the front seat, the car rides pretty good.
But as soon as I get 1 or 2 adults in the rear seat, or any weight in the trunk, the car bottoms on every small bump. Does this sound like just the struts are shot, or do you think the coils are history as well?
Thanx for any assistance.
Brian

At 30 mph, an small bump in the road will bottom it out. Even going very slowly over a speed bump or dip it will bottom out.

This is normal. I used to live in a complex with 3 really high speed bumps and if I had 3 or 4 people in the car it would bottom out if I didnt cut the bump right. This even happened BEFORE I dropped 1.5" w/ Tokico Illumnas and springs.

I have a hard time believing that is normal. Over the July 4th weekend I made a road trip to Mt. Rushmore. I had 4 people in the car (including myself) and the trunk was literally packed with camping stuff and a cooler full of food and ice. I did notice that I ocassionally bottomed out, but only when I was going relatively fast and hit a good size bump.
I cant imagine that a car like ours would or should bottom out with only a couple people in it. just my thought.

Did you buy the car new? Have you examined the rear coils for cracks or other problems? My wife has a 2000 Maxima SE (same A33 suspension setup) and with 70K+ there is no problem with bottoming out in the rear. When you load down the rear of the car, however, the simple physics of the situation dictate that you have less room for suspension travel, which could lead to a greater risk of bottoming out, but even with 400 lb. in the @$$-end, it shoudl not bottom out in normal driving.
When my 97 was lowered on Intrax springs and had 550 lb. of people in the back seat, the ride was harsh on bad streets, but that was lowered 1.5 inches...

Oops... I thought you were just talking about bottoming out the CAR on stuff like speed bumps not bottoming out the suspension while driving on the highway. In that case, this is NOT normal and your suspension is probably shot... better replace the struts asap.

No, I bought it used about a year ago with 21K on it. It was an executive lease turn in so some upper management guy drove it before me. I haven't put it on a ramp yet to check it out. I figure the struts are toast, but wasn't sure how much the springs came into play in keeping the back end up.
