My 5 speed tranny

I guess this probably started when i bought the car. It was making a sound, which my friends and i determined were normal sounds coming from the camshafts and fuel injectors. Once I pushed the clutch in, the noise stopped, so i thought it was my good pal throwout bearing. So i changed the disc and plate too, along with the bearing because it was just that time. After i got the car back, it was still making that noise. So now i'm sure it's coming from the tranny. Can anyone tell me what that sound is, and what's my best solution. Rebuild or JDM tranny?

That noise is your new friend, the transmission input shaft bearing.

Complete removal and disassembly of the transmission is required to fix this. Don't bother with a JDM or even a U.S. salvage yard unit, unless you pony up for a really late model 5th Gen. 5 speed. Same condition could be present and undetectable until you install it. Fix the one you have. If there is anything good about it, the parts are cheap. Labor kills though.

An input or main shaft bearing is going out. My friend went just through this this past summer in his 96 5spd I30. We pulled the tranny (again for the 3rd time) and had a shop rebuild it for about $1000.

After the rebuild he was grinding 5th slightly (some fucc up from the rebuild) so we had to pull it again and have that fixed (under warranty though).

Get ready for hell!!

Wait is the noise you're hearing a type of low deep humming noise?

My input shaft bearing is making noise like you wouldn't believe. Pulling the sucker in the next few weeks hopefully.

You can drive the car like this for a long time though. I first started hearing mine at about 100K miles. With 135K now, it is so loud it has to be fixed.

it's not exactly low, when you pop the hood. When you kick the clutch, it stops. it's not a hum either. it's more of a hard clicking noise.

I say hell because Mike is pretty lucky to have gotten as far as he has with that bad bearing. Zack342 didnt even last a couple of months... neither did my other friend. You are on borrowed time. Dont be suprised if you end up standed on the side of the road one of these days. To fix this problem, you are looking at least $1000 for a quality rebuild itself. If you dont have the skills to drop the tranny yourself and require the shop to do it, tack on another $1000, for a total of $2000. But the ultimate reason I say hell is because the 5spd tranny on these cars is the weakspot and they are full of reliabilty issues. My friend can personally vouch for this.

Not having the money just makes your situation even worse.

Well, I guess I found out what happens when the input shaft bearing gets really bad. Pulled my tranny and my clutch housing was full of gear oil. All over the clutch and flywheel. Made a real mess of things

The trannys seem to be the weak spot with most Japaneese cars. Our 2k+ autos have their own problems.

Shift solenoids seem to be a problem with the 2000s. Just be happy you dont have an Acura TL auto. I've heard of people with 50k and two tranny replacements. Overall our trannys arent bad though.

Wow... I see what you mean. The gear oil was all caked on the inside of the bell housing. Looks like both the flywheel and the clutch disk bit the dust on that one! What clutch/flywheel set up are you looking at next?

Just replacing the friction surface on the fidanza and going with the 6 puck sprung hub ClutchNet disk

Cool. I would stick with the fidanza... I absolutely love mine. I have not experienced any the "hesitation" issues that others claim it creates.

Hopefully you dont get any bad chatter from the puck style clutch disk.
