ignition coil position?

whats up guys.

i have a 2000 i30 with approx. 85k miles. i recently got the dreaded "service engine soon" light and im pretty sure that its one of my ignition coils because of the rough idle and missing although im going to have the code pulled tomorrow morning. at the moment my $$$ situation only permits for me to change out the defective coil(s). i would really like to change out all but im going to be closing on a house next week so the cash flow is a bit tight.
i know there are three at the front and three at the back. my question is what are the positions of the coils. which one is #1,#2, #3, etc.....?

id really appreciate the help before i tackle this project this weekend. thanks in advance.

the position #'s are in your owner manual with a picture of a block. How rough is the idle? if it's a misfire in one (or more) of the cylinders due to faulty coil the car will shake violently, not something you would call rough idle. What about your spark plugs, have you changed them recently? My problem with rough idle was fixed by cleaning TB. But def. pull the code first.

I’m not sure about this thought. Let me know if you don’t have the manual, I’ll look it up in mine.

unfortunately i do not have a manual for the car. the "shaking" is definetly more noticeable when the car is put into gear(either drive or reverse) but can be felt at idle. the plugs were changed at 75k to OEM NGK's. hopefully i will find out exactly whats going on when i have the code pulled tomorrow morning.

if anyone can confirm i30ish's post about the positions i would really appreciate it. thanks again.

Here's the correct order.

Did you check the codes?

they pulled a P1320, P0305 - Cylinder #5

I was really hoping is would be one of the front ones considering those are easier to get to.

So now that I know which one it is can someone point me to a DIY on how to do it?

I'd really appreciate the help. Thanks.

Yes, same thing happened to me. This could probably mean that your coil is fine, maybe bad gas, or some other crap got in there and caused misfire. I replaced mine just to be sure.

Have not done it myself, but observed my mechanic, looked like the hard part was getting to them. You might want to practice on the front coils, connection is the same. Unplug, unscrew the bolt, pull the coil out, replace…

i pulled the coil today and to my surprise i have the updated "gray dot" coils. i then pulled the spark plugs and wow were they dirty/ugly, mind you these were changed out about 10k miles ago. i cleaned them up as a temporary fix and the car drives and runs fine now. im going to pick up a new set of plugs and see how that goes. if not then im going to have to pick up a new coil.

wish me luck.

good luck, but what do you mean spark plugs were dirty? they will be burned black (and that's what they should look like) but they should not have "dirt" on them. What are the "grey dot" coils, never heard of those?

the "gray dot" coils are the updated version(supposed to be better) of the original coils that came with the 2000's. what i meant by "dirty/ugly" is that they were worse that the original plugs that had 75k miles on them. these were worse by means of looking "more burnt" and they only have 10k on them. kinda hard to explain. i hope you understand.
