Normal RPMs?

So I was driving along today and I noticed that at 45mph and no acceleration, just cruising.. my tach was at 900rpm. Is that normal? I thought it looked a tad low. When i sped up to 45mph it would do its normal revving, but then it would drop in two stages, with the drop to 900rpm bouncing a little. It seems a little odd, it didn't really affect my driving but I never noticed this before.

Also on some hard accelerations, when I let up on the gas (at speed limit) the car jerks again. I had them replace the engine mounts some time ago and it fixed the 1st-2nd gear jerk, but now its a little different. I hear the 2001 i30 has some harsh shifting sometimes, would this be it? I hope it's normal.

thanks

900 RPM is just about right...if you are stopped, that is.

That jerk is caused by the torque convertor. Very common in auto trannies. Haver you gotten a full tranny service yet?

Yeah they did one when I had the tranny problem with it hesitating some time ago, but I was planning on getting one next week, anyways. Maybe I'm just not used to driving with the A/C on anymore... Damn Summertime

How many miles do you have on your car?

May I recommend two things:

1. Use Mobil 1 full synthetic ATF when you get the transmission fluid flushed. It will make a big difference.

2. Reset the ECU (by disconnecting the battery at the negative terminal -- and then reconnecting it about 10 minutes later). For the first week, occassionally use your selector to do upshifting and downshifting according to the way you want your tranny to shift normally.

Thats way too low. It should be around 2000 rpm.

don't know about the jerks because i have them too and it's probably transmission, but my rpm's are normal, yours are too low for 45mph. If car is driving ok, not counting the jerks, may it be just your gauge going crazy?

Well it could be. Could it be a vacuum hose thing?

Anyways 2000rpm is kinda high, if i'm coasting, I can maintain at 2000rpm but once I let off its coasting way lower, with AC on.
