High Mileage

I have a 98 Infiniti I30 with abnormally high mileage... It now has 188k on it and it had 159k on it when I bought it back in 2004. I am just wondering if anyone knows on average how much mileage a 98 I30 usually gets before having major mechanical problems. I haven't had any problems with it yet other than the thermostat needing to be changed. Also, my engine is stalling out when I first crank it up. It revs up then stalls and it takes about 2-3 attempts to actually get it started but after that, everytime I try to start it afterwards it starts with no problem until it sits for a long time (hours). Anyone know what could be causing this? I want to get an I35 with low mileage. Are those cars good? I don't want to put a whole lot of time/money into this car with it having 188k on it if it's going to have more problems in the future. Any suggestions?

At 188k, there will be a few maintenance items that need changing, but nothing major. One exception may be the tranny, but lower mileage used replacements can be had cheaply.

I'm no expert, but check on your IACV/cold air idle valve on the morning stalls. Have you checked for ECU codes?

I've heard the alternator will need to be changed by that time but mine is still strong at 140K. It's not a big deal to change if it fails...just could be inconvenient when it does.

In my experience with other cars, you'll be better off to replace it yourself if/when it fails and get the part from the local parts store.

Also the starter has probably been changed already so you're good to go...

haha, that's funny, me and my freind both pickud up our i30's with around 160k, we both had the exact same problems around the same amount of miles. Struts, alternator, y-pipe, knock sensor, o2 sensors, waterpump. btw, you should be able to get 250K out of your motor and tranny, read my thread titled Krunked Teardown of a VQ if you want proof that ur car is bulletproof.

You could still have codes... just ones that aren't tripping the CEL. You might want to browse the 4th gen forum stickies for help.

If you're looking to save money, then hang on to the I30 until it requires a repair that exceeds the market value of the vehicle... or many repairs in a short period of time that exceed the market value of the vehicle.

I had a '97 I30 and I now own a '02 I35. I'm glad I upgraded, but I could have saved money by keeping the I30. Just a thought.

Ditto hangin onto the I30. I contemplated a change and with this forum and no major issues, I decided to hang onto it till it turns to dust or costs me an engine to fix.

Great body style, good on gas, no slouch on the highway & no payments = long term posession.

my I30 has 244K, the only major think i've had to replace has been front axles. Still orig water pump, y pipe, motor, tranny, etc. I swapped out teh suspension back when it had 220K or so, but i love this thing. I've had other little things go bad, starters, brakes, interior lights(seat heater, cruise control) my sunroof broke(fix in home, just too lazy, and now its too cold) my drivers seat motor went, (junk yard pickup) but i couldn't ask for anything more out of a 10 yr old car. still gettin 25/27 mpg on the highway, and holdin its on against whatever i can find. Shes takin a beating, and always came back for more

i got it in 03 w/ ~170K IIRC. it was already high mileage, and i've been riding it pretty much everywhere since then. from VA i've been to TX, MO, FL, NY, CT, OH, and AL all at least twice. and it was my daily driver when i was commuting for 80 miles one way on a daily basis. I've got nothing but respect for nissan engineers

Thanks for the feedback guys. I think that I'm gonna keep the I30 although I do want another car in the near future. Either the I35 or G35. Anybody know how good/bad the G35 is? (power, gas mileage, etc.) I am taking my car to a mechanic soon to get the front axles replaced as well as a new problem I have discovered which I think might be wheel bearings... I hear a humming noise coming from the rear right side of the car and the faster I go, the louder it gets. When I take sharp turns to the left the noise goes away for a sec and then comes right back. It's REALLY ANNOYING. I have to turn the radio up loud to drown it out. What do you guys think it could be? And my third mechanical problem is the cold start stalls that I need to get checked out.

G35s are great cars. Try to get an 05 or 06 6MT as those came with 298 hp instead of the 260 hp that the 03 and 04 came in. The interiors are really enhanced for those years as well.

As far as your problem goes, that sounds like a wheel bearing.
