vb mod on an infiniti 2001 automatic
vb mod on an infiniti 2001 automatic
has anyone done this yet on a 2001? My car is slipping a few times and i was hoping that maybe a transmission oil change would cure it.. but if i'm gonna spend all kinds of money on transmission oils like amsoil stuff, i'd rather spend good money on getting the whole thing done correctly like getting a tranny cooler,VB mod, and amsoil tranny oils.
thanks!
thanks!
Not really any different then doing it on a 2001 Maxima. But if you're slipping, more than likely, you are going to need a rebuild on top of your planned vb, and oil cooler. The new oil can actually make things worse in some cases on auto trannys that have not had the oil changes in a long time.
I had this 89 ford with 90,000 and it never had the tranny fluid changed. The car was slipping in 1st, so I decided to change the fluid. When I did, the fluid was so old, pieces of the tranny filter came pouring out with it. I replaced the filter and added the fresh fluid. The old tranny fluid had been in there for so long, the only thing holding the clutch packs together was the gunky old fluid. Since auto tranny fluid is a detergent, the new fluid stripped some of the gunk away and the clutch packs down and as a result, only 1st gear worked now, and it of course was still slipping. The car had like a top speed of 30 mph red lining after that.
Just something to think about.

awhhh weak! well if i had bought this car used from a nissan dealer about 2 years ago, i should be ok right? dont they do at that jazz before they sell the car to someone? i bought it at 46900 miles and now its been about 38000 miles since then....close to 82000 or so. I'm due for a tranny oil change
what would you suggest i do I30ds? should i just have a tranny shop look at it? If the tranny is perhaps shot to hell, maybe it would be a good time to switch to a manny tranny

If you bought it at 38K and the recommended change is at 30K, it probably did not get changed unless the previous owner did it and then sold the car right after. Thats why when I got my car I did a complete maintenance overhaul regardless of the condition of the item. New oil, tranny fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, air filter, fuel filter, brakes, coolant, spark plugs... the whole deal.
Its kinda a 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' situation. On one side, you could not change it and get a little more life outta the tranny. Or, on the other side, you change it and get almost immediate failure. The previous owner could have changed it and in that case you would be fine... for the time being. THe bottom line is its slipping now so its only a matter of time before the tranny fails... regardless of the condition of the fluid.
Basically, you have several solutions to the more long term issue:
1. Get the tranny rebuilt.
2. Get the tranny built up for higher performance. Getting it built up would be a good option if you wanted to boost in the future. It would go well with the vb mod too. Expect this to cost mucho dinero though.
3. Replace the tranny with another one... used of course (probably the best option on a tight budget).
4. Manual swap. Maximum performance here... not even a built auto would compare. Expect this to cost a lot also. Especially if you have to pay someone to do it for you.
thanks for the info I30ds...i may just bite the bullet and do the vb mod, fresh amsoil change and cooler..if it fails then hahaha oh well. thats a great time to push for a manny tranny. I love this car so much that i wont part it if its just a tranny problem
There is a TSB on some solenoid packs that tend to crap out on our trannys... Something else to consider.
Also, I would not flush the tranny at that high a mileage unless you have been doing it throughout the life of the car. Flushing with high miles can actually increase or CAUSE slipage.
If it is not just the solinoid pack, you may be looking at a rebuild or replacement.
