How do you get the retaining nut off? I tried searching, but could not find anything.

 

Are you talking about the silver, circular collar on the outside, where the mast retracts below?

If so, you should see two notches...put the tips of some needlenose pliers into those notches and unscrew it like it was a regular screw.
