Problem with my '96 A32

Ok guys its freezing here in St. Cloud, MN and for some reason my A32 doesn't want to start. I tried replacing my battery with an Optima Red Top ($180 hit in the pants) but the problem still exists. I drove it around for about an hour charging the battery, then as soon as I turn off the engine, it's impossible to start back up. The electrics turn on faintly, but the engine does not turn over at all. I thought the alternator could be at fault, but when the tow truck guy jumped my baby again, he tried to take off one of the battery terminals and it kept running so I guess the alternator is fine. Do you guys have any ideas as to what could be wrong? It's becoming a huge pain to have to jump my car every time I want to go somewhere. LOL

I'm dealing with a similar issue with my Z right now. You might want to have your alternator tested, because it may power the car, but lack the ability to charge the battery.

yeah just because it runs with the cable off does not mean that the alternator is good, take it in to have it tested. and good choice on the battery btw i have a optima yellow top that i have owned for 8 or 9 years, and it is still goin strong.

Ok guys thanks for all the help. I just purchased an alternator off ebay for $86 shipped. Can anybody please link me to a write up of an alternator install? I tried finding one myself but had no luck.

4TH GEN how tos. I remember doing it on my A32, wasn't terrible but very time consuming. Also, make sure your starter is ok. The how to on that is in the 4th gen how tos as well. The starter isn't terrible either, much easier than the alternator, but alot of intake stuff to take out. Good luck.
