looking for a replacement battery I30 2001
hey guys,
Up here in CO the winter was pretty bad, lots of snow and temps usually in single digits to negatives. During startup, my car would sometimes "click" and not start on very cold days but on warmer days it would start up fine. I know its the battery because its the original and they only last for about 3-4years. Theres no way to fill water up in these cells as its sealed up pretty good. I am looking for a new battery
Searching through the posts from the 5thgen max forums, I found a lot of people opting for the optima red top batteries. I'd like to get one of these but paying an additional 50-60 bucks compared to other brands that put out more CCA's might not justify the cost. Can anyone share some experience with this type of battery and how its suppose to differ to some brands...say like Checker/Kragen auto parts...Exide series? Also, I notice that on Optimas website, they dont support 2001 I30 infinitis but they do with Maximas of the same year and the 2002+ I35's....Is there a difference in voltage for these years?

I've had an Optima Red top battery in my 96 I30 and currently am working with an Optima yellow top battery in my 2000 I30. I haven't ever experienced any rough start up issues because of the battery even in the cold weather. Granted im in MD and don't have as cold weather as you do in CO but it gets pretty cold at night in the dead of winter and i've never had any problems. Even with a load of the regular car plus car alarm (aftermarket), HID custom relay harness (self made, and a 4awg amp wire routing to my RF amp i 've never had any issues what so ever. If i didn't trust them i wouldn't recommend them to anyone or i wouldn't even opt to put them in the new car, but i do, so im gonna recommend them based on durability and reliability.
Also, fitting the battery into the I30 just takes creativity. They come with an extra base, but its not really tall enough. I just added some washers on top of the battery tied down so that the bolts would still tighten. I'd also recommend the red top battery because i remember that the Battery terminal fits better and without any modification to the red top as opposed to the yellow top.

I have an Optima Red Top. Can't say anything about cold starts...hehe... but I like it; it looks pretty in the engine bay, LOL.
It fits perfectly, but the one that the application guide (Optima) lists doesn't fit that well.
Get the 75/35 model and put the cover (I think it's the cover) underneath as a tray like the directions suggest to boost its height, and then you should be able to fit the factory cables and battery brace with no problem.
EDIT: Also, if you have a Costco nearby you can usually get them there a lot cheaper than other places. I think I got mine for like $95-100.

Well, I have a different recommendation: EXIDE ORBITAL. This is one, outstanding battery. I installed mine about 18 months ago and it still cranks like new. Left my lights on overnight once, and it still cranked w/o any hesitation at all.
PLUS, it is cheaper (and more reliable according to reviews) than the Optima.

Besides, Exide is Checker brand... Checker is probably the WORST automotive parts store to ever exist on the face of the planet.
