Xenon Headlight change

Sorry, I tried a search first.....

My 2000 I30 has Xenon HID headlights. One is burnt. I could not find any at the auto part store. Where do I get replacements and how do you change them?

Thanks!

Well if you have HIDs, then you would need a D2R bulb. I recommend getting like an OSRAM or Philips bulb (OEM brands). You can get them from a dealership, but I'm sure Ebay or an online site is much cheaper. It's actually pretty easy to change them 0.o so I'm sure you'll figure it out=p

Thanks for the tip on the source. I will check it out.

Not sure if you have ever seen the back of the HID headlight, but it is not obvious how to change the low beam bulb. Do you just start taking screws out and disassembling until you find it?

Yeah, eBay is the best place to buy D2R bulbs. Very cheap. If I was home I'd sell you the pair I have sitting on my shelf.

Additionally, if you care about the bulbs being the same color, you should probably replace them in pairs. If color isn't a main concern, then just replace the burnt out one.

As to how to change the bulb:

If you look behind the headlight you'll see a silver metal thing screwed to the back of the headlight behind the low beam (3 screws).

Basically, the idea is, you need to unscrew that (it's called an igniter) in order to remove the bulb. Once you have that removed, you'll have to twist off the connector from the igniter that's attached to the base of the bulb. Then you'll have to push a spring clip out of the way (looks just like an unbent paperclip) and then you can pull the bulb out. Reverse the process to put the new one in.

Now, if you can do all this with the headlight in the car, you'll probably save some time and work. Most people can't, so the other option is to do the same, but take the headlight off the car in order to better access that stuff.

To do that, remove the two bolts at the top of the headlight when you have the hood open. Remove the bulbs/wiring you can from the back of the headlight. Then, go under the car, remove the splash shield under that side of the car, look up, above the foglight, and you should see one more bolt holding a small bracket of the headlight to the fender. It goes in horizontally rather than vertically. Remove that, then pull the headlight out from the front of the car. It's clipped in at the bottom so you'll have to give it a tug forward to make it come loose.

Good luck.

Instructions worked great

I just replaced my burned out D2R bulb by your instructions. I took my battery out which gave me plenty of room to work. Took me an hour all together. Sure beats shelling out hundreds of dollars to the dealer. Thanks!

Could someone please tell me what size bolt this is? I also have one of the bulbs go out on me. Thank you in advance!
