White smoke coming from tailpipe

Recently Ive noticed that when I start my car in the morning to head to work, white smoke comes out of my tailpipe for just a few seconds then it clears up. It only does this when the car has been sitting for a long time, such as over night. Any ideas or suggestions here?

By the way, its a 99 Inifiniti I30.

If it quickly dissolves into the air, this is normal operation and is just a small bit of steam that is produced from water in the tailpipe from the cool night before.

If it lingers like a cloud for awhile, does not stop or is somewhat blue, you have an issue.

Its definitely not bluish at all. Its whiter than regular steam that comes out from it being super cold outside. When I first start it up, white smoke rolls out for just a few seconds then its gone. Hopefully its nothing to worry about.

Sounds like condensation to me...shouldn't be anything to worry about.

This has been happening a little more lately. Still not a constant smoke from my tail pipes, just a puff for a few seconds then it clears up. I also noticed that instead of just happening occasionally at startup, one time I was driving and it did it. Any ideas what it could be before I take it to the "stealership" and have them check it out?

you might want to keep an eye on your coolant level just in case.

White smoke is fine, esp if t goes away. If you get different colors that means your engine is burning something besides fuel.

As long as your not puff out white clouds of smoke then your good, nothing to worry about

What? What do you mean by "oil coming towards the manifold?"

White smoke denotes water being burnt (or in the case above, boiled in the exhaust system). Blue smoke is oil being burnt, and grey/black smoke means excess fuel.

Just a follow up for an old thread.

My car still billows white smoke at times. This typically happens within a few hundred miles of an oil change then disappears until the next one. It can happen upon sitting for several hours or pulling off from a redlight. The car will often feel like its stuttering/hesitating while the smoke is present then it clears right up and the engine pulls just fine.

Leaking guide tube seals on your valve covers. Oil is getting in around the spark plugs and burning giving you the smoke.

Mine was doing this. I replaced the valve cover gasket and it was fixed. Common problem for these models.
