Tachometer malfunctioning when cold

I got in my 2001 I30 today (23 degrees outside) and when I started driving I noticed that the tachometer was really sluggish and reading inaccurately (ie idle was showing at 500 and it would show 1500 when it was really at more like 3000). All the other guages were fine. I parked the car and left it. Four hours later I went out to lunch and the tach was sluggish again, but as I drove and the car warmed up it returned to normal behavior. Given that it did return to normal when the car had warmed up fully I have to imagine the cold has something to do with it. Anybody have any idea what the cause might be? I've driven this car in similarly cold weather before without this issue occuring.
