SES: P0464 - fuel level sensor intermittent
Hey guys,
I got this code pulled at Autozone today. I tried the search and Google and haven't found any helpful info except one post about how this was actually the O2 sensor. Anybody have any info about this code? I understand it has something to do with the fuel level circuit but don't have any info on what's actually wrong or how to repair it. The SES light came on about 8 hours after a fill-up, not sure if this has anything to do with it.
I have the car for almost 2 years and this is the only time the light has come one. Figures, I have to have the car inspected by the end of the month.
Thanks in adavance for any assistance, it's really appreciated.

Hmmm I have never encountered anyone with this problem before on a Maxima/I30. However this happens quite often on BMWs. Fuel level sender is basically a float on a coat hanger looking contraption, on BMWs it is a non-serviceable part and it usually means your R&Ring the gas tank. The only advice I can give you at this point is drive the car for a long while until your gas light comes on (to get the fuel good and hot), then spray a LOT of Seafoam in your gas tank when it almost completely empty (do this at the gas station, do not drive on JUST Seafoam!) then fill it up 90% (do not OVERFILL the gas tank, ever) and then clear the code (you can do this a number of ways, ask if you don't know how) and drive it some more. If the movement of the sender unit is impeded due to carbon buildup then this should loosen it up significantly and will hopefully get it moving normally again, otherwise, if your problem is electrical in nature it is very difficult for me to guesstimate the source from the information that you've given... good luck!

Thanks very much for the reply. I posted the follwoing on the 5th gen section yesterday:
I have reviewed the FSM and have spoken with two Infiniti dealers in my area. I have been told there is no separate Fuel Level Sensor, it's part of the sending unit and needs to be replaced as a unit.
I was also told that a burned-out Low Fuel Warning Light bulb can cause this code. Does this make any sense to anyone more familiar with electronics? Is there a way to check whether this bulb is working? According to my owner's manual it does no come on with the other warning lights when the key is turned to the On position. If not, I guess I will have to wait until the fuel level drops.
I plan to clear the code this weekend and see if it comes back. I will try the seafoam also and check the electrical connections.
From searching on Google this seems to be a more common problem with Nissan trucks, not a lot of info on maximas/I30s.
