I30 Guru's

I'm in the process of getting a 2000 Infiniti i30. the check engine light is on (but there is no gas cap) and it has a little hesitation when driving and idles a little high... now.. i tried hooking my obdII reader to the obdII and got no power or anything from it.. what could this be?

I'm guessing the hesitation/idle issue is from the missing gas cap.

I'm not sure about the OBD issue though.

I would second starting with the gas cap.

Are you sure your code reader is working properly? Try it on another car to make sure.

ok.. so the story behind the car... here it goes

I was originally on the way to Saluda county ( over an hour away from columbia) to actually purchase a 98 i30 for 800 dollars with 150k on it but the transmission had a skip, and it had been sitting for 2 years with a broken window and ripped leather. I was getting off work at 6:30 grabbing my wife and kids and hitting the road. While I sat in my office at the jail (i'm a cpl in the detention center here) I looked on craigslist and saw a 2000 i30 for 2000 dollars so I email the seller and she emailed me back informing me that the car idles high and it bogs down sometimes, and also the check engine light is on. So I asked to see the vehicle as it was on the way to Saluda. I go to check it out and her dad is standing out side, cranks it and it idled at about 1500 so I started thinking and asking questions.. he then informed me that the car started the skip and check engine light after she FILLED UP 2 months ago.. I look at the mileage and its at 89k. So we talk some more (while waiting on his daughter to get there the owner of the car) and he informs me that she drove it back and fourth to college she just graduated and he didnt want to dump any more money into it for her and that she already has her eye on another car. So when she pulls up she says "well i filled up and the car started messing up, Oh yeah I lost the GAS CAP TOO" ... in my head BINGO.. so i give the dad a spill about how I build maxima's and these are the same cars blah blah blah, I pop the hood and tell him I hear valve tap (pure bs) and it sounded like cylinder 4 had a missfire (more bull****) and he said "yeah I kind of figured thats what it was" so I said I can't do 2k if I have to replace the engine but the body is good. so we talk some more. Long story short with in the hour I was at the atm with drawing 600 dollars and signing the title. my wife drove the car because she cant drive a stick and I was in the 4.5 max, so we went to wal mart bought a 3 dollar gas cap and the check engine light turned off, the idle went down today after we filled up the car with 93..

Unbelievable. That is great. Hopefully it does well for you. Low mileage too. Ours has 73,xxx on it at the moment. And my great grandmother only drives about 1500 miles a year.

hesitation could be anything from coil packs, leaking spark plug grommits, fuel injectors, oxygen sensors

in a sense maybe... this car was a steal.. but the seller was motivated to sell by any means.. he even stated he had his mechanic look at it and he advised him to get rid of the car for his daughter before to late

Its a shame when people don't know what they got. Especially, today. With the internet and all. Its just plain ignorance.
