i35 Navigation

Hey,

My i35 is not equipped with navigation.

I have an after market double din, but I was thinking about maybe mounting a (possibly motorized using stock parts from a wreck) Android tablet in the same place as the stock nav. Has anyone opened it up to see what's under the panel on the dash? Is it just open space?

I think it is just open space, although I don't think much. My I30 has a bin on top of the dash whereas I know the non-nav I35s just have a blank panel. I know the stock screen is pretty small so you would probably be better off with something small like a 5-inch smartphone like a Samsung Galaxy Note. But I'm not sure what you would use it for without data for maps. Maybe better to make a sturdy place to temporarily mount a smartphone for navigation while you're driving if you have have one.

I thought about doing something like that for a long time, but not sure how to come up with motorized screen. I thought about somehow making some rails and have screen go up from a switch. Let me know if there are any ideas on how to make the rails.

I seem to remember a thread a few years ago where someone did exactly what you're thinking. I don't recall if the thread was in the I30/I35 forum or the 5th gen forum.
