Transmission Issues
Transmission Issues
Yesterday I noticed that the gear indicator on the dash showed 3 no matter what gear the car is in. Some times it will show some of the other gears, but never D. The car seems to not want to shift into 4th gear even up to 65 mph. I tried searching, but couldn't find anything. Any ideas?

I checked for codes and there are none. At a light I shifted through each gear and the D lit up. I drove it for just over a mile just fine, then it downshifted back to third and the 3 came back up on the indicator. Is there a sensor that knows what gear you put the car in?
Here is a video of shifting through each gear while parked.

About 2 weeks ago the transmission started slipping at about 80 mph when performing throttle modulation to keep from hitting the car in front. The level was a bit low, so I added 1 quart of fluid. I checked for a fluid type and found that Dexron III, I believe that was the one, will work in these cars. I added one quart of high mileage ATF and she drove great.
When this problem started I was jumping off another car with a very dead battery. I was sitting on a pretty steep hill with the car in park running at 1,200 rpm for 5 minutes.
I mention all this because it might be that the high mileage fluid had a cleaner that broke a piece of dirt free that got stuck in a valve.
When adding the fluid I noticed that it did have some black in the fluid. I had intended to change the fluid 3 times over the next 9,000 miles to get it clean.
The only reason I did not start this when I added the fluid is because I am not sure if the torque converter might be going. I don't want to put in all new fluid just to open the trans.
The car has 200,000 miles, and I don't know any service history.
Should I go ahead and change the transmission fluid or should I look into replacing the torque converter?
The transmission fluid was a bit high, clear, and dirty. Here is a pic.

Get a gallon jug of amsoil high performance synthetic atf. Remove the return hose from the cooler built into the bottom of the radiator and replace all of the fluid that way. There are articles on here with pictures and details. Did you use walmart supertech?
I used Nissan DMatic.
