New Camera, New Pics...
New Camera, New Pics (updated 4/7/09)...
Just bought a Nikon D40 and decided to try out some night shots. The lighting wasn't as good as I thought it'd be, but I tried to do with what I had. I don't really have any experience in photography but I wanted to pick it up as a hobby, so I figured I might as well get a DSLR. If you have any advice, feel free to comment.

Thanks! I was skeptical about buying the camera, but I wanted control over the shutter speed and aperture. Once I saw how pictures were turning out, any regret disappeared. As of right now, I'd say the Nikon D40 is a great entry-level DSLR for those who want to get into photography but at the same time won't take it much more seriously than an occasional hobby. I'm sure there are others with much more experience with DSLR's though.

I did use a tripod
womp womp, LOL. I'm still trying to figure out the best settings for night shots, practice makes perfect.
As far as the camera settings go, I was working in manual mode so I could learn what affects the picture.
For the first picture I believe the aperture was set somewhere between f/10 and f/16 and shutter speed set to at least 4 seconds. ISO was at 800 and White Balance was set to incandescent since there were yellowish lights around.
The last two pictures were actually taken first, I believe with a wider aperture (around f/5) and shutter speed also set to at least 4 seconds. ISO was at 400 and White Balance was on Auto. The lighting from that side of the car was a lot further away so the car isn't as bright, even with the wider aperture.
