What causes this whinning noise when in gear?

1990 GXE...it has this weird "whinning" noise when put in gears.
(all gears, including reverse)

the max drives fine and had the transmission replaced 15 months ago.

My friend (who is a mechanic...but he does not work on maxima) thinks it is the oil pump...but I am not too sure...because the noise can only be heard while in gears...

There is no noise while in P or N.

thanks in advance,

my car was making a horrible whining sound and it turned out to be that the power steering resevoir was basically bone dry. the whining was there all the time even while in P and N so i'm not sure if this would apply to you. just something easy to check.

thanks CanadianMaxima,

It is not the pwr steering pump reservoir...I checked all fluid...everything is full...except the transmission appeared to be over-filled.

I never know the true level of the transmission fluid...all the cars I owned, they all appeared to be over-filled...(ie, above the H mark even when the car is cold.)

Should this be a concern?

you also checked it when the car was on at operating temperature right? if i'm not mistaken i think the car should be running and at operation temperature when you check the fluid level. anyone wanna verify this?

I am going to remove all the drive belts (ac, alternator, and ps)
and see if the noise continues...

next I guess I should check the exhaust manifold? something is definitely making noise under load (even the load is light)...
