I have a set of 5-Spoke SE rims that have the factory silver finish. I want to go with a gunmetal finish for various reasons.

I have some automotive paint in the proper color. I have tested it on the centercaps (they were faded anyway) and like it a lot.

My questions are as follows:

Given the fact that there will have to be weights added to the rims as I change tires, rebalance, etc., what is the best way to finish the rims so that they are least likely to be scratched or have the finish ruined in some way?

What is the best way to protect the finish from rocks, debris, etc.? I have had gunmetal finished (painted) rims on my Jeep, and Xterras have a similar finish in the fact that it is paint and not actually colored or tinted metal. My rims did not get chipped up at all. What finishing procedures will be most effective in preventing this?

Also, the factory silver finish s in great shape. Are the rims powdercoated, or simply painted. Is the paint baked on?

I assume that your suggestion was related to preventing chipping. Am I correct?

 

yes, thats what i was referring to.

 

I would go clear coat as previously stated, depending on how many layers of the "gun metal" paint you apply your going to want to do at least 3 coats of the clear maybe 6. This will not protect it indefinitly, but with a thick clear coat rocks will it that and have to break that away before it gets to your gun metal

 

So can I buy a good clear coat at an auto parts store, or do I need to have it done professionally? Also, what about the issue of adding the weights later, how likely are they to scratch off the paint? I was going to do 4-5 coats, at least...

 

Easy fix...just have the tire shop add the weights on the inside lip[ of the rim works for mine!

 

you can get the clear coat from www.paintscratch.com...........and yes you can get it at your local auto store as well. no need for professionals.

 

Good idea. I knew this was done for aftermarket rims, but I was not sure if it could be done on stockers as well. Thanks for the tip...
