My engine makes sounds like theres loss of air.....I need some help.

Whats up everyone! I need some help or some information about my engine if anyone has any. This is the problem; When my engine (automatic trans. by the way) is idiling it sounds like there is air maybe leaking somewere from a hose or somthing because when it idles, it will kind of sputter in a way and then kick right back up. It does this every ten or so seconds but it will never sputter enough to the point will it will make the engine die but it sounds real close. Now I took it to a car autoshop store to pick up a few things and while I was there I had the guy there look at it and he said I should clean the air filter, 02 sensors, and the fuel injectors. I havent done this yet but I am going to as soon as I find out how haha. If anyone has any knowledge at all about this kind of thing, please, please let me know because I have no idea. Thank you for your time.

All those things your mechanic said are good ideas. A good rule of thumb is come up with possible causes, and eliminate them starting with the easiest (cheapest).. A tuneup is always a good start if it has been a while. Get an idea of the overall condition of the engine by pulling a spark plug or two and inspecting. Check distributer cap too. But the rise and fall sounds an awful lot like a vaccuum leak or MAF sensor. Definately try a new air filter. If no, give the MAF a good smack with the plastic handle of a screwdriver (don't laugh,. this is how we discovered a bad MAF in my friends BMW!) If nothing changes, even for a moment, move on to the vac lines. Grab some throttle body cleaner and lightly spray around suspect vac lines, intake manifold mating surfaces, look for broken, disconnected or cracked lines. etc. THe TB cleaner will cause a rise and fall in RPM. If after many hours of tracing lines no luck, get it to an experienced technician. I've known people that just have a nack for finding running probs like this. Good luck, hope this is helpful
