Monster Flow Filter?
Monster Flow Filter?
HI,
Can I get some opinions on this as I just got my cattman combo intake and the Monster Filter looks kind of cheap. Have any of you that have this had any type of problems with dust or other things getting in the intake? Also please respond only if you have experiance, I want serious opinions only, not "Monster Flow sucks cause I am a K&N type of guy". Also please note I am not interested in the design as I dont show off my engine often. Deezo I know you have this and I would love your input (along with every one else
).Thanks in advance.

Do your own research out there on the web and come to your conclusion. We are all too brand loyal to give you an objective opinion. However, my heavily biased opinion is that you will never find a MF on any of my cars, EVER.

i have monsterflow filter..and have no problems so far....and i remember someone did a dyno test btwn the k&n and the monsterflow filter...and there wasn't really any power difference...but as far as how well will the foam hold up, i'm not sure. i had my filter for only a few months
I had the MF on my cai for a few weeks without any problems but I swapped it to a K&N because I feel that foam on a CAI isnt going to last since its out in the open exposed to nature(no foglights)

I have had my MF filter installed for 6 weeks now on a hybrid setup. Construction of the MF filter is decent. It's not super rigid but it's a air filter so how strong does it have to be? Filtration seems to be pretty good to me. I would like to point out that the combination of the type of foam and tactifying agent MF uses is far superior to ANY oil-soaked pre-foam filter used in commercial lawn care or competitive off-road equipment I have seen. IMO there is no comparision between the two. The MF foam is very dense and the tactifying agent does a better job of trapping contaminants than oil.
The complaint I have with the MF is that it's a b!tch to clean compared with the K&N. You have to take the MF filter apart and separate the foam filter and foam pre-filter to clean it. But you can clean the MF filter completely. You can never fully clean a K&N filter because eventually contaminants will work their way inbetween the paper filter media and metal mesh. I always found the ends of the K&N filter to hold contaminants as well because it is hard to clean because of the shape of the filters themselves. Also I hated waiting for the K&N filter dry out after cleaning it.

Pro. Most of these replies are just opinion(y2kse excluded haha) I haven't seen test results for MF specifically but I've seen tests w/ dry foam(it was absolutely terrible). Amsoil and others use the same idea of foam + oil to catch dirt/dust but I have NO IDEA if the construction is even similar.
And searching for dust in the maf or intake tract is probably not a good idea. Because if you actually find some, that would indicate a HUGE leak. Point is you could be letting huge amounts of dust and have a perfectly clean intake tract.
And to the gentlemen who says it WON'T hurt your engine, well since test data is limited, the jury is out on that one.

and wat kind of tests r u talking about that's absolutely terrible?
PRO: check this thread out, but it's a performance test tho between K&N and MF

i dont think PR would change to MF filter on their CAI if the filter damages our engine...they might have changed to MF cus it's cheaper...jus my opinion

MaximaPower: I have looked at that before but still doesn't give me results on how it filters the air. My argument is why are so many companies that mke intakes use the MF. My first though was that it's cheaper but I later found it costs the same (if not more) then K&N.
Jeff: Yeah I saw those other foam filter results but I still dont know why all these intake companies would use MF if it was that bad. I saw that MF uses a double layer so that might work good. The only thing that is really bothering me is how the thing pops out if I pull on it. I will go to my friends performance shop later today and see what he thinks, maybe he has other pop chargers that I could compare it with.
Thanks for everyones help, I still dont know if I should be putting this on or not but I might try it for a week till I can get a better filter.
Thanks,
Paul
I still think people use the MF for cost reasons. Retail might be about the same, but I bet wholesale is alot cheaper. Frankancar was going to use MF but switched to apexi based on the link I found for him. Dont' know what he using currently now.
There is also no data on the micron filteration rates on the MF either. That and the fact there is no hard data worries me the most. Doubling up on the filter doesn't make me feel better, especially when it probably hinders flow effeciency
Search would have revealed this:

On my old car i had a K&N now I got the MF, its been on the car maybe a month a half. I checked the filter out just yesterday, and it looks pretty good so far. There was some sand and in the filter, but I live in florida and have friends who have sand for driveways. So i'm always driving in it. (Plus its good to know its stopping little sand bits, so i feel really good about it stopping other debri) By just tapping the MF any dirt i could see fell out. All in all i would prolly rather have the K&N because of the reputation they have, but the MF will work just fine for you.

Exactly, I think the main issue would be concerning the longevity of these foam filters. Mentioning those high HP muscle cars isn't really a fair justification because those babies are re-built on a regular basis.
K&N filters give you a million mile warranty. What does MonsterFlow give you? While that may not be much, it's better than nothing.

Yup, but those high HP (e.g. muscle) cars aren't going to last for too long with the HKS. They came in DEAD LAST in a recent filtration test. And until I see some independent lab tests on the MF, there is NO WAY I'd put one on my Max.

1. No filter
2. K&N
I never said those filters were awesome because it's being used on those cars. It was just a suggestion as to where to find more info about it as there's a lot more information about them elsewhere than here on the .Org.

I cleaned at just over 12 months but the damage had already begun. I had cut 3 1" diam circles in the bottom splash guard to help airflow. Maybe that was enough for rain, snow, mud to get in.
I have no complaints on my MF after 2 months and the filter is still pretty clean NY to NJ driver with a couple of runs threw new construction (trying to finish building the new house) I beleve i read somewhere the MF will filter down to 10 microns?? is that possible. I could be wrong. IMHO foam filter better than paper filter. Foam should last longer if properly cared for.
Wow. Learn somehing new on the org everyday. From 1 million to 12 months. Drastic change of policy. In that case, I would lean towrds the hybrid setup more. The CAI filter gets very dirty fast and it's a pain to get at come cleaning time.

Check that paperwork. K&N used for CAI and Hybrids is only a 12mo warranty - it's considered off-road.
