MAF failures and aftermarket intakes...

I was considering getting an aftermarket intake and being troubled by recent posts on MAF failures, I went through all the MAF-related posts and polls and recorded what intakes people were using when their MAF failed. First, a recent poll revealed that roughly a third of 5th gen. owners have an aftermarket intake. It would therefore be reasonable to expect that if aftermarket intakes are not contributing to MAF failures, the incidence of MAF failures in cars with aftermarket intakes would be roughly one third of all MAF failures. Is that true? You be the judge, here are the numbers I collected:

MAF failures in stock cars:

Maximam
GXEme
RI Max
JSpecMax
abcdefhg

MAF failures in cars with K&N panel filter:

maxmachine
JBWhitley
chinaonnitrous1
Bulldawg
MaximaZero
stockmax

MAF failures in cars with aftermarket intakes:

akrus
SmokinOdum
Maximus1000
BioMaxDDS
jcphamer
SmokinOdum
Y2KSESteve?
Padsy 02 6sp
JSpecMax
raprazant
TellschMax02
maxxxed out
timby01?
nvmymax2
Gr8bone
Shaun Ladd
Foglght?
BEEI30
SR20DEN
studman

I tried to record all MAF incidences, if you find any inaccuracies please let me know.

My SES light has NEVER been on and I went from a Frankencar intake to an Injen with no problems. I don't unplug the MAF sensor and work around it when I installed both intakes.

I think it's important to try and note what year maxima they own and how many miles theyve driven with the aftermarket intake. kloogy, don't jinx yourself, bro. 20k later and your MAF might fail. who knows right? but, at least theyre selling the MAFs cheaper now.

Here's my more specific details:

first failure happened in nov or dec. Car was cold...weather was really cold right around or below freezing. I had just pull out of the parking lot at work and had a green light so I half throttled it to make the light and that when putt putt check engine light and traction control lights go on and car was running on safe mode.
It sucked cuz I had to put the stock back on in the cold this was around 38k

2nd time was in my garage in the morning this past june. I'm almost at 50k and I didn't drive the max for almost a week. It was about 70 degrees out and I start the car...immediately check engine and traction control lights. so I didn't rev and the car wasn't moving.

I have one of the first 2k's I bought back in june of '99
when I don't have the cone on I use a K&N panel filter so I'm in both the 2nd and 3rd categories. since I got my 2nd maf replaced under warranty (thank goodness!) I've kept the stock box and k&n panel in and plan to keep it that way...we'll see what happens...

My SES light came on the second I fired up my car after I installed my Frankencar. It never turned off. Soon as I put on my Injen CAI it went off and has stayed off. I really like that thing.

Build Dates

The build dates on all of the cars with MAF failures would probably help out a little.

Mine is :

10/01

There was a poll to track MAF failure by model year and it showed almost even numbers for every year.

How much does it cost to fix MAF sensor? Among the cars with intakes that had their MAF failure, which intake is more likely to cause more trouble? We need to have a poll and run some ANOVA on the spreadsheet..
