Here's an interesting article from Automotive News about all the (expected) upcoming new models including Nissans:

Augh! I sure hope Motor Trend is wrong about this-

2003 Nissan Maxima: Redesigned on larger version of new Altima platform to compete with Toyota Avalon.

If I wanted an isolation box, I would have bought an Avalon.

This is what I've heard

From http://www.freshalloy.com they've said the Max will be getting bigger both size wise and engine size, with horsepower ranging from 250-280. The big news right now is the new Z and Altima. Check the sight out for a drawing of what the new altima will look like...might be the size of a 4th gen Max, with a 190hp (that's right I said 190 hp) I4 and an optional 230 hp V6...now this may seem like a lot since the Max is only currently 222hp, but Nissan brass have stated that Nissan will have the most hp in their class, and since the altima will be moving up to compete with the camcords, that means a 6 with more than 200 hp.

Here's what I have gotten from various sources.

1) Altima will move up to Max size and get new I4 and the 3.0 V6 (maybe slightly larger than current max) for 2002 model year but only minor cosmetic changes. There is a sweet sketch of the new altima on Freshalloy here.
2) Max and I30 get 3.5@240-280 Hp for 2002.
3) No more Max or I30 as we know it after 2003, a new larger model possibly w/V-8 power and RWD becomes the new nissan flagship. From what I hear it will be built as a true sports sedan and altima will be family sedan to compete w/CamCords.

Not much info but I used to be a Nissan salesman and I got the info from a reliable source still in the biz.
