I just installed my short throw shifter, it seems to work fine but in first, third and fifth it touches the front of the shift cutout. In second, fourth and reverse it is in the middle of the shift area. Is this right? It feels wrong but maybe I will get used to it. It definatly does not go the other way, I tried turning it around and it was even farther forward.

BTW - it is the pacesetter STS from Custommaxima.

not really. I should go take some pics of mine in every gear for you to see. When it's in 4th it looks like it's in neutral, but when it's in 1-3-5 it shouldn't be touching the top.

I purchased a pacesetter short throw shifter from custommaxima 3-4 weeks ago. My sts is about a 1/4" to 3/8" away from the front cutout.

I had a problem with fitment when it was first installed. The shifter was cocked to the right. I dropped the entire shifter assembly like you mentioned in your other STS thread. I traced the problem to the rear bracket, the same one that you have the red arrows pointing to in the pic you posted.

When I installed the rear bracket I wasn't paying close attention and fastened it down crooked. I went back and straightened it and the shifter worked fine. Try moving that rear bracket around to see if it helps.

I will try that, right now that baracket is loose because I can't loosen or tighten those bolts. I am going to drill out those bolts ad replace them, when I do I will try moving the bracket around to see if it helps.

My STS is very close to the cutout, but does not touch even under hard, sudden acceleration when the shifter 'leans' forward a bit. It is close, I've got to imagine that you could do some manuevering to get it a bit further away. Maybe throw a washer or two between the frame and the bolt closest to the front of the car on the shifter housing so the shifter would be tilted backwards slightly? That's just a random thought trying to picture the mechanism in my head.

I know on my shift to 3rd the shifter definately touches the trim piece. I always hear it a bit. But I got the car the way it is, and its fine with me.

The pacesetter does make the shifter look like it's in Neutral when in 2nd and 4th. I like it better when the shifter is far back, I don't know why...but the short throws are worth the trade off.

I think the 2k+ Mustang shifters are bad@ss, the bent rod causes the shifter to be set at an angle, and the shift **** is curved too. Looks like a cobra snake! Wish Nissan made the minima with that type of shifter.

Michael, your shifter looks very nice, but totally different from the stangs. Here is the internals of the stang's shifter assembly:

And here is the shifter itself:

The shifter color is ugly but I love the design. I wonder how the throws are on that thing. How much custom work do you guys think it would take to get that thing on a Max? I wonder if the shifter's placing is directly where the max's is so it could be a direct fit or not...

Actually, looking at your photo, I would guess that my shift **** is almost identical in size and shape. Curved forward off the shifter rod...mine adds grooves and ergonomic curves for your hand...but the same basic head of a cobra look (look at my web site for multiple angles, but it looks pretty similar). If you took my shift **** and stuck it on a Mustang shifter, I think it would end up with the same orientation...I realize the underlying shifter assembly is dramatically different. It would just be a matter of having somebody take an existing STS, duplicate the size and shape of the bottom half of the shifter and just custom build the top have to bend backwards a bit to duplicate the orientation of the Mustang shifter right? I'd think a machine shop could build that for you if you gave them another shifter to base the design on.

I agree, if someone makes an adjustable shifter that sits farther back I will swap it out, but the shorter throws are worth it for now.

Anachron, is your shifter noisier now? It seems my STS is stiffer AND noisier (more mechanical rubbing of the linkages sound) then stock maxima shifters

It's definatly notchier, particularly going into second. I don't think it's to much stiffer but I do not have it set for an extramly short throw either. There is a little more noise but I on't think it is that much.

Could we possibly heat up the pacesetter rod and bend it a little more so it ended up closer to the center?

Hmm, that could be a really bad move. If you bend the shifting rod then you might mess up the whole movement of the shift assembly.
