finally! after years of starting prob... solved

Well first of all, the car w/ the starting problem ISNT a max but my old celica. Damn i love this board, i read the thread about the "battery relocation" and you guys were discussing about wire gauge.... and that got me thinking. Well the celica i've had for a year now but my cousin had it for the rest of the 9 years and there was always a problem w/ the starter after getting an alarm system in it. Well it's runnin on its 4th starter now and the problem came back this summer... so i had my mechanic wire it seperately to a starter switch in order to bypass teh security starter kill switch (which i think is faulty now). So..... i had starter replaced and starter button installed last summer and it worked fine.... and eventually got bad again. The problem i'd have was it'd just *click click click* everytime i try to start... either in the morning or when the car has been running and hot. Well this foolish mechanic used a 14 gauge wire which runs from the starter all the way back to my dash panel to the button. Now if i understand this right... using a 14 gauge wire won't conduct properly to start the starter because when it gets hot it will lose even more conductivity... cuz that's when the problem happens. In order to test this, i used a shorter wire (about 1 foot) directly from starter to battery and it cranked properly everytime i touched the wire to terminal.

So do you guys think a 10 gauge wire would work alright? And is my "theory" correct about the wire being too high of a gauge and too long to be able to properly conduct?? I think i should replace the ground for the starter too...

BTW, do you guys know if home depot sells 10 gauge wires or something?

Try a local hobby shop or Tower Hobbies. The 10 guage the RC industry uses is high quality braided copper (in some cases impregnated with silver). The insulation on the good stuff is silicone so it should last forever.

Thanks! i found a roll of 25ft 10 gauge wire for 8 bucks @ Fry's Electronics.

Well! I rewired it yesterday. pulled a wire from the battery to the starter switch and straight back to the starter. Only prob is it will crank any time u push the button since it's not connected to the fuse box (before the mechanic connected it to the ciggerette lighter i believe). That's fine, as long as key is in the ACC position, the engine will start. My brother just called me and told he had no problems startin the car this morning or throughout the day!
