I have the "$15 intake" in my car right now that was written up months ago (sorry, no link), but the 3" rubber plumbing coupling is kinda bulging out on the side closest to the firewall (on account of the angle it needs to make from the MAF to the OEM accordian tubing, so I think the airflow may not be as optimal inside there. It also creates a pathway with a larger internal volume & I think I may be losing a bit of low end, on account of the intake velocity not being high enough at low RPM's.
Also, I chose to do some clear silicone sealing on the inside of the accordian opening/coupling joint to smooth out the hard edge that the air would otherwise have to rush over/past at that joint. I think my work was well done and the joint is smoother now inside, but not nearly as smooth as a straight pipe (like yours) would be.
I'd definitely consider doing it your way if I could get a good writeup & parts list.
