88 Maxima SE: 2nd Radiator Fan won't go on
88 Maxima SE: 2nd Radiator Fan won't go on
About a year ago I noticed, that the A/C is not as cool as it's supposed to plus during the hot summer days the water temperature is higher than it should be.
At that time I figured out, that the green fusible link went out plus the 2nd Fan relay also got burned.
At that time I replaced both and the 2nd fan was working for a while.
During the last couple weeks of scorching heat I noticed that the 2nd fan won't go on again, at this time because the green fusible link is broken again.
I have a feeling that I am facing the replacement of the 2nd (passenger side) radiator fan (I got quoted for $192 for part), but before I get one, I want to test this puppy.
I do have the factory service manual for my 88 Maxima, but it doesn't have any specs on trouble shooting the fan circuit.
Does anyone know how much ohm the resistance of the 2nd fan supposed to be measured right at the 1st connector of the fan?
Any idea where I could get a 2nd fan for less than $190?
A fusible link costs $10 at the dealer, is there website where I could get parts like this for more reasonable price?
I've looked at the circuit diagram of the radiator fans and the cross reference table of 'in what occasion which fan is on or off' and found that the 2nd fan was designed to be on ANY TIME when the A/C is on.
I think this is not the best design.
I think the 2nd fan should go on only if the outside temperature is so hot, that one fan can not cool the refrigerant down enough or if the coolant water temp is starting to rise.
Once I fixed the fan, I plan to install a switch in the control circuitry of the 2nd fan relay, that I can use to control when it should go on it if wants to.
Anybody elso made similar observation regarding this subject?
By the way just so that you will know the enviroment of this problem, I live in Southern California, and my Maxima is a stick shift one with Manual A/C.

Went through the same problem about a year ago, it was the fan motor. Should be able to pick one up from a salvage yard at a reasonable price.

Thats what I would say get the motor from the Salvage yard
