Aftermarket foglight wiring
Aftermarket foglight wiring
I'm thinking of getting some cheap aftermarket foglights to improve my road vision at night. What's the best way to wire them so that they automatically come on with the headlights? Also, if I could get my hands on an OEM light switch stalk with the fog switch, would I be able to use it with these aftermarket lights?
Thanks,
Doug

After some further research, it appears that this is a stupid question. My new question is, what's a good way to connect the foglights to the existing wiring, without ruining the wire harness? I plan on getting OEM fogs eventually so I don't want to destroy the harness or the wiring (with T-connectors).
Thanks,
Doug

yes, technically you could use that to control your new fogs. You would have to find the fog wiring harness burried up in the fender 1st. Then cut off the harness on the end, extend it and splice those wires into your new fog lights.
Im assuming your buying ALL the necessary parts(new stalk, and fog relay) to make the stock fog system work
DONE!

Cool, Ant, thanks... that's what I was thinking of doing. But do I HAVE to have a switch for it? Is there any way to wire it so that the foglights are permanently on while the low beams are on? I would just rather not have to deal with wiring through the firewall and stuff at this point.. I'm just interested in having better illumination until I can get a pair of OEM lights.
hey man just wire up the fog lights to the corner lights and they come on with the corners, i did that with my altima works great and takes a few minutes. just splice the wires and connect them. u can either wire them up to the little orange corner next to the turn signal or the corner next to the headlight. i wired mine to the little orange light on the side fender of the alty, and i know the maximas doesnt blink so it would be really easy to acces that so i suggest that. good luck

The problem w/ that is you may blow fuses. You might have to replace the fuse that can handle more amps. I tried that w/ OEM fogs light rewire job and kept blowin em. Good luck

Summary:
1 power input wire from relay to battery (+) with in-line fuse
1 "trigger" wire from relay to (+) low beam
1 ground from relay to ground
2 power output wires from relay to fogs (+)
2 wires from fogs to ground
That's it. You can do it in 30min to 1 hr.

A relay will take care of that problem. You run a power wire from the (+) battery to an in-line fuse, and continue running it to the relay. Take another wire and tap into the (+) of the low beam and connect the other end to the relay. Add a wire from the relay to ground (anywhere on chassis) and finally, take 1 wire from the relay to the (+) of the fog lights. And of course, don't forget to ground the fog.

BTW, where do you get these relays or what kind should i be looking for. This isn't specifically for the Maxima.. i have a starter button setup on my old celica but running a 5 gauge wire from the battery, THROUGH the firewall, to the starter button, and the other end back through the firewall to the starter. I was thinkin of using a relay so that the length of the fat 4 gauge wire won't have to be so long and just about 1-2 feet long connected via a relay and the only wire i need would be the trigger. Thanks!
