there is a shop

in LA that will do carbon fiber hoods for the 5th gen max, the only thing they need is a factory hood to do the mold. the price would be about 550.00 and 525.00 if about 10 people are interested.

The only thing we need is a hood, they will need it for a bout 3 weeks, so that leaves most of us out, besides there is no guarantee that they will return it without scratches, so the best way would be to get a used one so if anyone in the LA area knows of a used hood for sell, I could probably buy it and just have them add the cost of the hood to everyone else's price, unless someone else has an idea.

I estimate that you will save about 50 lbs

Re: there is a shop

In case anyone's interested in safety, a hood replacement may not be a bright idea... From what I understand, our [stock] hoods are specifically designed to absorb large amounts of energy by strategically crumpling... An aftermarket hood may not have been built with the same considerations towards safety...

Just a thought.., but 50lb sounds cool... how much more performance could you expect out of 50lbs??

-Tom

PS.. I'm sure that there's a market for stock Nissan hoods somewhere out there... Perhaps after you guys get the replacements, you could concentrate on finding a place where you could sell them, to recover some of the costs!!!

$500 bucks for a hood!!?? Why is it so expensive? It doesn't do anything that major to performance unless it looks cool. I want a description of what it would look like or a pic.

SAFETY?

hmmmm....

well, if you are so concerned about safety, then this why change anything from your car? i mean, technically, if you put mods in your car, which will void some of your warranty(depending on the level of mods you have in your car..)
and of course, some of these mods are not really 'safe'..from cops...
now, having said that, do i really want to stop fixing up my car? HELL NO~~~
i don't give a rat's-*** about that..
anywayz....carbon fiber hoods are the BOMB~~~
only wish the price was a bit cheaper...but then, it is CARBON FIBER hood so...

-peace...

p.s. Sorry...i can't give up my hood for 3 weeks either!! hehe =)

Re: SAFETY?

Well, when you say safety, you prolly mean

#1.. You don't like getting tickets... cops make you feel insecure.. modding your car, attracts cops.. just like you were driving a powdered doughnut... you equate this with "safety"

#2.. Mods encourage reckless driving... (i dunno.. many would disagree.. we call it "spirited driving" around here)

.................................................. .........

When I say safety, I mean the "Staying Alive", "Not dying" part..

By all means install a carbon fiber hood.. I would if I had the money... I just wanted to point out that the Nissan Stock hood is designed to absorb impacts... Perhaps an aftermarket hood would not be as thoughtfully designed with respect to our cars, and would affect overall driver safety in front-end collisions (wild speculation)...

Our Maximas tend to be pretty safe.. (quick test : goto http://www.copartfinder.com, and search for Maximas... Look at images.. Then search for something like "CIVIC"... Dear lord, half those people are dead!!!)
