how much did you guys pay for registration?

sorry to burden u guys with this question, but my friend who is the owner of a 93 maxima just got it and has a temporary registration. He wants to know how much for a real registration but i bought my car so far back, i forgot. I remember lying about how much the car cost though (or person i bought it from did) so we wouldn't pay as much as we did but i don't remember how much. The guys that bought car brand new, this might not help me much but those of u that bought your car new for around 3 to 8 thousand, if u remember or just bought your car, how much was registration? i'm thinking between 200 to 500. Let me know how far off i am.

thanks

mecca

Uh, registration fees will differ from state to state. Yearly registration of a passenger car here in Michigan is about $90. It doesn't change with the price of the vehicle when you purchase one. The SALES TAX is what you can cheat your way out of. If you report your only paid $10, sales tax will be like 60-70 cents. However, if you report $10,000, sales tax will be about 600-700 depending on your state's sales tax law (6% here in Michigan).

Tax and registration/license fees are completely different, but usually paid at the same place (DMV or Secretary of State's office)

In Massachusetts, they use the "blue book" value of the car if it is a used, old one. You need to fill out a form to waive the sales tax if you paid much less than what the car is worth. My first car was a Chevy POS, and the mechanic I bought it from offered to claim that I bought it for $100 cause the engine was damaged. I refused, then got taxed for the thing, which MA claimed was worth $1250 at the time. Argh!!

I THINK in nys you pay sales tax AND a charge based on the weight of the vehicle.

I just recieved my new stickers today in the mail for my 1993 SE. I paid $54 here in Southern California. If you live here in Southern California, we have to smog our cars every other registration on a 2 year cycle. So for $54 I didn't have to smog this time, but in 2004, I will have to smog. So at that time, I will have to pay for the registration fee plus smog fee ($8) plus the labor to smog the car (variable depending on the smog center, $25-30).

But, back about 4 years ago, when I first got the car, I believed it was somewhere around $150 to register the car. As the years pasted, I paid less and less for the regestration fee. I think registration fee is dependent on the year and value of the car. So maybe your friend might be around $100-ish or so.

Another SoCal Representative...

My registration this year is $70, only because I found out that my registration has already expired (3 days ago) and the state charges $5/every 10 days that you are late on your registration (89SE). I have to have this baby smogged this year, so I found a place to have the smog test done for $40 with a 10% discount for mentioning an ad they have listed in the SBC PacBell yellow pages. This includes a free retest within 30 days if I don't pass it the first time.

The new y-pipe, muffler and exhaust setup I've been wanting will have to wait until I finish paying this baby off - 6 more months and I'm free

Omegasrk, I'm wondering why my registration is more than yours is, and my car is 4 years older than yours. I thought CA went by how old your car is too.

Pit5bull, your right about registration being cheaper as your car gets older. Maybe it's because there is an addition registration fee for the years you have to smog the car? But, I totally agree with you that your registratoin should be cheaper. Just a thought.

Nah, i live in New Jersey, and i lied and said that i paid only $1500 for the car. Well it cuaght up with me about 11 months later, and the state dept of taxation sent me a big bill to cover the rest of the taxes, i was so p/o. Haha, i guess thats my punishment for living in NJ.
