Need help understanding the amp specs
Need help understanding the amp specs
I still can't get my **** right
My amp is Volfenhag ZX 7140. Reading from the manual, specs are:
max power output @2ohm 250x2=500w
output @2ohm 85x2=170w
@4ohm 60x2=120w
bridged power 170w
input impendance @ low level 10k ohms
looking at all the wiring diagrams here, I can run it in stereo mode 2 speakers (2-8 ohms means anywhere from 2 to 8 ohms?), mono mode (4-8ohms), and phantom channel mode (dont need that).
What I am trying to do is to run a single 12" Kicker Comp VR DVC-4ohm woofer off of that amp.
Can someone explain how much power will be going directly to the woofer, and if thats a good choice? Thanks!

Ok you have a dual 4 ohm voice coil sub.
You can try to bridge your amp and wire both voice coil bridged which would give you a 2 ohm load. Your amp will run hot and may shut off, and may not. amps differ. you will send the sub a bit over 170 watts.
Or you can play it safe and wire the amp in stereo at 4 ohms and this would send the sub 120 watts and would run cooler.

LeonBlackMax- how am I going to wire the amp in stereo at 4ohms...it is my understanding that a dual voice coil subwoofer has only one - and one +. I plan on running only one 12" woofer. How in the hell did my amp run two 10" MTXs then? Never shut off, but was kinda warm to the touch.
120 watts to the 300 rms-woofer is not a lot. Guess I either have to look for a 2-ohm model, or sell my amp and get another one.
a dual voice coil sub has 2 + and - outputs.
If you have not bought the sub yet you will do a lot better getting a dual 2 ohm. it will suit your application a lot better.
Also if you just want to get another amp. you can pick up a JBL BP300 for around 150-170 and it puts out 300 watts at 1 or 2 ohms. Very nice amp. Or you can get a JBL 600 for bout 200 and run it at 4 ohm putting out 300 watts, and if you ever want to add another sub it will double its output to 600 watts.
Hope that helps.

now I'm clear, thanks. I have never seen a dual voice coil sub in my life, and thought it has only one + and one - just like the regular one. If I get what I'm asking for my amp then I will sell it and buy another one with a bit higher rms, if not-I'll get a 2-ohm model.
