heaving vibration at steering wheel (kinda long)
heaving vibration at steering wheel (kinda long)
ok well, before the other night, i had a slight vibration from 60-80 mph at the wheel, and im pretty sure thats from needing my tires balanced and rotated or what not.....ok, so the other night, i was driving along a backroad type thing, and i was doing a good 80 mph (it was a str8 road, no twisties or anything)....anyways, i see a car pulling out of a side street, and i smalled on my brakes.....the guy just STOPPED in my lane, didnt even keep going....he just stoped there...there was a car coming in the other lane, so i couldnt go into that lane to go around em....so im about 5 ft from em, my tires were locked a good few seconds before than, and the guy finally decides to throw it in reverse, and he moves just in time...i missed him by literally, 3 inches.....well when i get passed em, i let go of the brake, and my tires unlock, and i go flying into the other lane (the guy in the other laned had stopped and backed up as well), and i almost slam onto the curb, but avoid that...i stop, get out, ask if everyones ok (not like i slammed into anyone or anything)....everyone was ok, i apologized, and went on my way...well on the way home, there was a now a deep vibration in the steering wheel, alot heavier than before, and now it continues past 80mph, till around 90, but i havent gone much faster than that....also, there is a vibration at low speeds as well.....now i burned my tires REALLY good when i was braking, lots of smoke, and even after i got out, talked to the people, and still drove away, i could still see lots of smoke....so my question is, wtf happened, and what exactly can i do to fix this? ....also, do i have to get new tires? thx
Might have caused some uneven wear on the tires if you slammed on your brakes like that. There might be one giant bald spot on your tires.
Also, when was the last time you've changed your brakes/rotors?

well, for my brakes/rotors....they were warped a few yrs ago, and this was before i had the car, so my mom had them replaced at the nissan dealer...musta been 2-3 years ago....when im going 90+, and i brake hard, there is also heavy vibration from the engine (sign of warped rotors...)...so, basically....i should just do _____ to my tires (besides buying new ones for now) and just get ____ x-drilled/slotted rotors (instead of buying oem's for more) and new pads..?

Wow. Okay there are like so many things wrong with this!!!!
The kind of vibration you're speaking of comes from the steering/suspension, not the engine.
If the vibration occurs during normal driving (I am not sure why you are driving so fast and tailgating?), NOT braking, a tire rotation, allignment, and balancing will help to reset this to some extent, but the uneven-ness will only wear with time. If the tires are THAT unevenly worn, replace them. Common causes for uneven tire wear: brakestands, poor allignment, low air pressure.
If the vibration in the steering/suspension occurs during higher-speed braking (such as to get off an exit ramp on the highway), your rotors are warped. Have the rotors shaved (resurfaced, turned) and REPLACE THE PADS. If the rotors are beyond shaving, replace them. Whenever rotors are resurfaced, you should replace the pads!!!
If you want rotors that will not warp, try Power Slot rotors. I do not recommend cross-drilled AND slotted rotors, as they warp easily as well.
If the vibration is only there now...after your near miss incident >>
