Serious trouble with Crank Shaft Sensor

I took my 95 5speed to the mechanic today to change my crank shaft sensor (ref). I used the scantool and it kept telling me change the ref sensor so we changed the ref sensor. The ref sensor is the one next to the oil pan. After I changed it I tried cranking the car and I still had the same problem and the light came back on, Crankshaft position sensor (ref) My mechanic insists that we changed the wrong one and that we should change the sensor on the other side, the positional. I dont know what to do because this thing is driving me nuts. I keep tellin him we changed the right sensor and he sez no. My car also had the worst shakes. We changed the spark plugs because they were looking really really bad. From what I recall I had changed my spark plugs back in Feb. Could they possibly have gone bad after just 10,000 miles?? Oh yeah I had the platinum 4's. Thanks for all your help guys.

Did you get 0802 or 0905?

What about checking the harnesses as well, not just the sensor itself could be bad?

i hop eyou didnt have the BOSCH +4's? NGK Platinum is what you are supposed to be using.

I would change out the other sensor and see what happens then. Im sure that will fix your dilema.

Actually I did have the Bosch Platinum 4's lol. I changed the plugs yesterday but I changed them to regular bosch platinums. The NGK's were priced at about 12 bucks a peice chillll money is tight. The Boschs were only like 2 a peice.

too funny.

I'm a female.

Anyway, since you already replaced one, try replacing the other, but DO NOT USE BOSCH SPARK PLUGS. I can't imagine that is helping your situation at all!

You're not listening. It has already been suggested that you check the sensor wiring harness and to take your mechanics advice to change the other sensor. Since you know better, why bother asking for help? Figure it out yourself, if you can.

I think your mechanic is correct in saying that it may be the wrong sensor.... cleanmax02 has the same problem as you and the sensor he is replacing is not near the oil pan, but the positional sensor your mechanic is telling you about.... Bosch Platinum's are bad for maxima motors because we don't have spark wires, so the plug gets much hotter in our cars..... causing it to degrade.

Stick with NGK platinums, sure they may cost 12 bucks but you've already spent money on bosch +4 and the single tipped ones now....The ngk's will last you another few years easy. Good luck

haha my fault. I started it by pointing out that, after all the threads we've had about this, he was not heeding any of our other advice so why should he listen to more of it?

I understand what everyone is saying about the plugs. I'll get them changed as soon as I get some money. The problem that I'm concerned about though right now is the sensor. I keep recieveing a crankshaft sensor code for the reference, thats the one next to the oil pan. Why would I have to change the other sensor if thats not what I'm gettin the code for?? I spoke to my mechanic this morning and he refuses to believe that it is the wiring harness he sez the wiring harnesses last the lifetime of the car they dont get changed. He told me to change the other sensor the one on the tranny,

Ok, gonna break it down here. . .

1) Bosch plugs are 'not Scottish' - they're CRAAAAAAAPPP!!!!! NGK all the way, baybee. (Several experienced technicians have told me personally that the materials used in the platinum cores of the Bosch plugs are inferior, compared to the NGK's). Swap 'em.

2) I DISAGREE with the advice here & from your mechanic to 'randomly replace' the other (POS/CPS) sensor. Unless you/your mechanic has evidence (a DTC) to suggest this is specifically the problem, he's just throwing darts blindfolded (-at your expense). That's not a valid diagnosis.

3) I AGREE with the advice to check the wiring harness on the REF sensor (the one throwing the DTC). (Btw, fire your lazy-a$$ mechanic & buy a Hayne's manual & a multimeter: this is EASY D.I.Y. work, broken down step by step in Haynes. If you can follow instructions to make Mac&Cheese, YOU CAN DO THIS!)

4) See:

Good luck & keep us posted. . .
