so i FINALLY install my frankencar midpipe...

alright! since no one is taking interest in my original post... i gotta post again lol. Well this is specifically post installation stuff.

First of all, when I let the engine idle and turn the wheels, i hear a *pop* sound (heard it specifically from intake/filter... more like air being sucked in). Is that normal?

Also, I went out for a test drive... i didn't feel much of a difference... or maybe it's just me and i'm tired from installing it lol. *******it it's not even as loud as ppl say it's suppose to be. Maybe it is, but i don't think it's as loud as ppl say it is. definately no a "v8" engine sound... then again I haven't been in a V8 car.

At least i gained experience w/o a ECU light, THANK GOD. Someone mentioned that I should reset my computer and that's why i'm not noticing any gains... according to him when i reset my computer, it will notice a bigger pipe or something and suck in more air faster. Is that true?? I never resetted my ECU.

yea they recommend resetting it. Something having to do with the new air/fuel mixture since your getting a lot more air than stock now.

yea the pop sucking sound is normal.

Im not shure if noise is related to 5speeds or not beause I put on my old cone intake on a 95 5speed and it didnt seem as loud as it did when I had it on my auto so

the auto is louder than 5spd.

first gear hardly gets any noise...second gear gets the most noise from the intake. so put it in 2nd and go WOT to redline and see if thats the sound ur looking for.

hmm damn i never considered that nor did i read it any posts. So... i think ill search now on how to reset the ECU. Hopefully that will make the difference. Thanks.

BTW- nismo, i do have a 5-spd and w/ just the cone filter on my stock intake system i thought it was loud at high speeds, but w/ the midpipe it hasn't grown any louder. Perhaps since i already have a catback i'm not noticing anything.. dunno

edit: I searched.... didn't find much sooo, can someone gimme some insight on how to reset the ECU? A maxima friend of mine quoted

"Diconect the battery ( both sides ) for 2 min.... then put it back on...and start the car...dont touch anything...dont touch the wheel becuase if u turn it that revs the motor...dont put it into drive NOTHING just start the car....and let it run and sit there for 5 min... in that 5 min your computer will be running threw the whole car looking for changings and reprograming it self... after the 5 min...turn off the car, then start it right back up...and your cars ecu has been rest...."

I'm gonna try that tomorrow morning, but are there any other ways?

Two ways to reset your ECU:

1. Take off the access panel on the extreme left bottom of the center console near where it meets the firewall. Use a screwdriver and follow the instructions on the sticker on the ECU.

2. Disconnect the battery for at least 15 minutes, then reconnect it.

does it still apply while at idle/neutral? 5speed was still quieter.

it was mentioned that you didn't think it was as loud as you thought it might be with your new midpipe. just curious... do you have a ypipe? marcdown and i have a similar hybrid intake setup... but he has a ypipe and a test pipe... and his car seems quieter than mine with a stock exhaust. it might be attributed to better flow of air. the less restrictive the airflow... = less resistance... so less resonance. i even noticed a very noticeable difference in sound after i installed my midpipe. it is not nearly as ... loud/raspy as it was with just the cone filter. it has a deeper... smoother sound now. just my .02

I don't have a y-pipe but I do have a catback... I thought that was why it wasn't so loud too. Actually something that i did notice... not sure if it was there before.... but the exhaust sounds a bit louder... jus a tiny bit, but then again it's probably just my imagination.

About the reset ECU part... the car battery was disconnected for more than 3 hours so i guess i won't be seeing a difference lol. oooooh well, i guess this midpipe works better w/ autos or someting.

Actually, I've heard that you see the most difference in midpipes with autos because they suffer most from the low end torque that the midpipes supposedly give back. Manuals can always just out of the low end to make up for the loss so they don't see the difference as much.

I am just about to install my Frankencar. Question. I removed my MAF but the resonator box is still attached. How do I separate the two? I see a rubber seal between the MAF and the resonator. Is the rubber seal permanently attached to the resonator, or the MAF? I am so afraid of breaking something.

I'm glad I saw this post, becuase I don't think I ever reset my ECU..But I do feel a big difference in my car since installing it. I'm going to reset it on my next day off of work....

Thanks Bro!!!

I love the sound of the intake. However, I believe I have traded my low-end power for high end. I don't think my car pulls as hard at low end. I'm now sure maybe its the fact I have stopped flooring the gas pedal as much because of the risk of losing my tranny. Maybe its in my head as I have no real numbers to prove. Anyway I think this intake is awesome and well worth the wait. Thanks, Steve and everyone for making this happen!

The resonator does come off the MAF. It's not permantently sealed or anything... it's jsut a real tight fit and that was the hardest part for me. I was gettin so ****ed, but eventually I got it off... i just stuck a flat-head screwdriver and slowly wedged it out. Be sure u do this over a couple layers of cloth so when it finally coems out w/ that force, the maf doesn't hit the ground accidently or anything. Good Luck.

From what i heard, the ECU auto-restarts every 500 mile-ish?

at idle the intake doesn't make any sound...i think it starts at around 3k rpms to hear the growl.

off this topic but i need a quick question answered about the starter...

From what i read on vbxmaxima's website, the starter is directly connected to the battery?? So in that case, i can disconnect that wire connected to the starter and put in another wire that runs straight to the battery right??

wo0T!!!!!!!!!

My modding weekend is FINALLY completed. OMFG i think i notice definate gains... when i test drove it last night, i don't think i reset the ECU properly but... yes! I did the midpipe and the ground upgrade and i don't know which did the trick but the car runs alot more smoother now and i think i got some low-end back. I'm happy now

Last night was rather disappointing but now it makes up for it.

It's time to wash my baby! I'll see if the electrical system works better now. I'll only be able to probably notice this at night because i can watch and look out for any light fluctuation and how fast the car starts each time.

for my auto, the intake makes a noticable hiss even with all the accessories off and hood closed. I listened to a 5sp hybrid just today and it wasnt as loud of a hiss and the hood was even up. I idle around 700 so thats not the reason.

W/ the midpipe on now, I can here a low-tone whistling sound coming from my intake. I read a thread last week about how it makes it.

Hmm i don't know how an auto sounds... maybe the hiss is a leak somewhere.

you should not hear any "pop" noises; I suggest you check the hoses and rubber couplings.
