Replaced my fuel filter today

Firstly, there was way more gas left in it than I thought would be after disconnecting the fuel pump fuse and cranking a bunch of times. Anyway, so I took the old one off, and as I was pouring the gas in it out, all these black flecks and chunks started coming out!! I threw a bottle of Techron in the tank a few days ago, could this be dirt deposits coming off of the fuel lines and into the filter? Nonetheless, I was glad to get the new OEM filter on. My idle is now back to normal, as my previous 10 cranks showed the tach jump up to 1500 rpm for a second, then down to 500 and then levelling at 1000 or so (warm up). Now it just goes up to 1000 and stays there. Just thought I'd share my little experience.

I replaced mine about 3 weeks ago and I also noticed black stuff coming out. Anyway, I noticed a nice increase in gas mileage.

BTW from experience, the best way to change the filter is to undo the top hose and then turn the filter over and drain the gas into a GLASS container. Don't use plastic container because the gas will melt it.

Take care

I want to change my fuel filter. Is there anything I need to do before I take the old filter off and replace with a new one.

I had a napa unit on before. When I changed it w/ 30k on it. I couldn't even blow air though the thing vs I could do it w/ the new filter. Odd

was your idle rough when you had the old filter in there? or was the idle rough only after you put the pump fuse back in?

Buy an OEM fuel filter. Then you have to release the pressure in the gas lines (that hissing sound when you take your gas cap off). You can do this by removing the fuse for the fuel pump and then start the car. When the car cuts off from lack of fuel the lines are depressurized. Now just unclamp the old fuel filter, put the new fuel filter in its place, clamp in on, put your fuse back in and enjoy your refound gas mileage.

It was rough when I had the old fuel filter in there. It also struggled to reach redline like it had in previous months (guessing it was starved for fuel). Like I said, if you have any symptoms, $8 is not bad to see if the fuel filter is the problem.

No. gasoline will melt SOME plastics. not most of the ones used in cups and bowls- unless you're talking about styrofoam.. mix that with gasoline, and you've got a gooey mess. regular plastic cups or cool-whip bowls won't have a problem. I use them all the time to clean parts in gasoline and paint thinner. (not that I EVER clean parts with gasoline. )

Ok, this sounds easy enough. Just where is the fuel filter located? I'm driving a 93 GXE and maybe this might be a good thing to add to my upkeep schedule.

it is on the firewall on the driver's side. you'll see a black hose going into the bottom of it and one coming out of the top. its a silver cylinder. if you still can't find it, go buy the filter then you'll see what it looks like.
