Replacing valve cover bolts

Hi all,

I've been doing some work in my engine bay the past few weeks cleaning and replacing rusted parts.

I was wondering if it's possible to replace the bolts and washers holding the valve cover down without damaging the seal/gasket.

Would it be ok if I changed them one at a time?

I just don't want to do something that may cause an oil leak later on.

BTW, anyone know what size they are?

Thanks for the info.

JP

I'd replace the gasket if I were you, its not worth all the trouble putting it back together and findind out its leaking

make sure to tighten the bolts in the proper sequence!

(I dont know what size the bolts are)

I had a freind who tried to do that on his altima and it leaked. So I would definitely change the gasket.....

I think you can try it but be prepared to replace the gasket if it leaks.

Do one at a time using the sequence AND torque spec in the fsm but be careful, you CAN strip these bolts.

You don't need to replace the gasket, it is the reusable rubber type. I took my valve cover off 3 years ago to polish and I reused the gasket; I haven't had a leak yet.

If you're worried about it, just replace one bolt at a time.

ok. Guess I'll give it a try sometime soon.

Just need to find out what size those bolts are.

If you have a good friend that can help you out, take off one bolt and one washer and have someone drive you up to a hardware store and most Home Depots & Lowes' can help you out.
