CEL issues - aftermarket exhaust - need assistance
CEL issues - aftermarket exhaust - need assistance
Took my car BACK to the dealer after having them tell me it was an intake sensor (of course CEL came back on) and now they're throwing me the aftermarket exhaust CRAP. I have a Stillen Y, B and muffler, the rear o2 sensor is the sensor in question - has anyone here had a problem with ANY (nevertheless Stillen) exhausts throwing a constant CEL? Dood is trying to tell me that I just have to deal with it. I was agreeable while I was there because I had nothing to back up any claims, but I want to know from the experts here ... should that be happening?
I would think especially not with Stillen since they are to Nissan pretty much what TRD is for Toyota ... but I haven't heard of ANYTHING like this in my years with the .org. I think I'm also about to call Stillen and see what they say. I think they're avoiding fixing it because they would have to fix it for free (accident related). If I went in there without having had an accident, I'm sure they would be replacing ALL KINDS of sensors (at my cost of course) even ones that weren't bad. I just need some concrete evidence that will make these monkies fix the car right before I have to call State Farm about this.

and if its the rear 02 .. it does'nt serve any mechanical purpose on the maxima.. it just tells you when something is wrong with your cat

I'm having pretty much the same problem as you. My front O2 sensor is giving me a check engine light. I went to the Nissan dealership and talked to the head mechanic, he says its because I have no cat. I removed it and put in a test pipe. He said the engine needs a certain amount of backpressure or the computer will assume a bad sensor. Because the sensor is "bad" then it will richen the mixture. He said I can replace it, but it will eventually just do it again.

That said, I still don't want to stare at the CEL every time I get into my car ... i was also told it richens up the mixture to compensate which is bad. I got 17mpg on my last fill up ... not good.

Actually, how do you remove that o2 sensor? There's a nut looking thing that looks welded to the pipe, or is it? Do I turn the nut to release the sensor or do I turn the bottom of the sensor itself? I want to just take it out and clean it with rubbing alcohol so I can avoid going back to the dealer on this one (I fixed my last two issues they couldn't seem to fix).

OMG i contradicted myself
i said 5 min for the Front 02 Sensor and then in this thread i said 10http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....pen+and+wrench
My CEL tripped when my rear O2 sensor got loose. Make sure your O2 sensor and is secure. Oh yeah, most service advisors see modded cars as their bread and butter. Anything that is wrong on the car is always blamed on the mods and not the factory parts themselves. Trust me, my brother used to be one at Honda dealership.
Well Tornado your 02 sensor is getting a little old so you might need to put in a new one, but try this first. When I went to a greddy exhaust I started to get the CEL. I pulled each of my O2 sensors and took rubbing alochol and poured it into a rag. I then rubbed the sensors really hard till the suit came off. Let them dry and put them back in, reset the ECU and have NEVER had one since.

Hey I'll give the rubbing alcohol a try. If I remember right, it was kinda dirty looking when I had it out when installing my Y pipe. I thought nothing of it at the time though. If that does't work I guess I'll drop the big bucks on a new sensor. One question though, I'm now running nitrous (just got it saturday, yeah!), will this sensor hurt me at all? I would think that if its causing richness, it would only help to prevent leanness on the nitrous.
