Mysterious front suspension noise: remedied
Well, mostly. I figured out what it was at least...
It's the bottom dead coil on the front springs banging against the metal perch. As the coil compresses it rotates in the perch somewhat.. slowly when done on a jack but when you imagine the force that they are compressed when you hit a bump it makes sense that the metal tip of the spring coil banging against the metal "stop" on the spring perch could make some racket. I was also experiencing some creaky kind of sounds when at full steering lock at low speeds.. this was the springs binding up on the perch and grinding against the metal.
My quick fix was to glob giant blobs of axle grease on the end of the spring and underneath the spring where it rests against the perch (as much as possible). This worked. I'm going to go get a tube of caulk or silicone or something and do it right this weekend.
Also, while I was sitting there with my head in the wheel well I decided to check the other bolts. Heim joints for the front sway bar were a tad loose. They should not be totally tight (you don't want to crush the rubber bushings) but mine had worked themselves a little bit loose.
Am I a Maxima Mechanical Ninja or what? Haha, just kidding.
