1987 Alarm

Not sure if it comes with all cars, but I just bought a 1987 and it has an alarm. There is an indicator on the dashboard to the left of the steering wheel next to the trunk release and windshield wipers. It is labeled "security" and flashes.

I was wondering if anyone knew how to disable the alarm. I was in my house yesterday when I heard the horn going off. I went in to the garage and had to open the door. That seemed to turn it off. I was just wondering though how I can turn this feature on and off. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

There's no way to turn the alarm off, it automatically turns on when you lock the doors.

There are 6 sensors, one in each of the doors, one in the hood, and one in the trunk. I'd check those and make sure they're making good contact. The ones in the doors are covered with a black rubber, they're at the bottom of the door frame. The one in the trunk is in the swtich on the trunk lid.

If you can't figure out which sensor is going off, then you can disable the system by either disconnecting the box back in the trunk between the speakers, or by disconnecting each sensor. However, if you disconnect the sensors, the door ajar light and the interior lights won't come on when you open the door.

There IS a way to disable this alarm. Pop the trunk and look underneath where the rear speakers are. There should be 2 control boxes with a wiring harness plugging into both. One should be for the adjustable shock absorber (if applicable), and the other will be for the security system. It's either one or the other. Should say "Anti-Theft" on it. Simply unplug it, no more alarm. I did this because the unlock sensor doesn't work on the drivers side door, so if I unlocked the door from the outside, the rest of the doors don't unlock, and doesn't disable the alarm, so it'd go off. I had to either unlock the car from thepassengers side door, or open the trunk before I got in the car. Until I figured out how to unplug it. Hope this helps!

I didn't want to respond to this because I am very light-headed right now. I just can't stay in bed anymore. Anyway, don't disconnect that alarm, you'll need it in the long run. There is a way to turn off your alarm without doing all those disconnecting of plugs. All you have to do is two things. Really there are two options; one, when the alarm is tripped, you can deactivate it by locking your doors by using your keys as if you are locking the car. It'll turn right off. Secondly, sometimes and only sometimes you can deactivate you alarm system by turning your ignition system to the accessory position. It should deactivate it too. I am still trying to figure that one out now cause it only does it sometimes.

Well, I hope that helps you in the long run.................

Actually, not to contradict you, I think that it actually disables the ignition and starter when the alarm is tripped (says so in the manual), as a security feature, maybe so that it can't be hotwired. At least mine's like that, because I couldn't turn the alarm off from inside via the ignition switch. However, this could be different on different models.

it was very stupid of them to not have a separate fuse for the alarm, because the alarm fuse also controls the deck and interior lights.

my 85' sedan is doing the same thing. it tripped the ignition and now the car is lifeless. if i unplugged the system from the trunk like (blackmaxima88) said, would it allow the ignition to function properly?
