Aftermarket Steering wheels

Who here has an aftermarket steering wheel? If any, why do you like it better than stock?

I don't, but I've driven cars that have. The two things you'll notice right away are, MUCH thicker, and MUCH smaller radius. This means two things, being thicker, it feels more substantial, fits in your hands better. As for the smaller radius, it improves feedback from the wheels. By being smaller radius, it magnifies the information from the front wheels. Also, by being smaller, there is less movement required from your hands to input a steering change. This means there is a slight advantage in handling.

For an aftermarket steering wheel you have no airbag for driver.

I thougth some wheels have optional kits for the air bag? I dont think I have seen o0ne on a maxima but I thought some cars were able to retain the stock air bag option.

i have a momo steering wheel in my max. i would have to say i love it. i have never liked the idea of having something blow up in my face if i get into an accident so not having a driver airbag is no big deal i will deal without one.

PROS:
-the steering wheel allows me move my seat up closer to the pedals and steering wheels this is good when i decide to go toss my car around the mountain passes. i have better steering and throttle control.
steering is alot easier or so it seems i can get the car to turn with -less movement of the steerring wheel.
-and i love the way it looks in the car.
-basically all the stuff that sin said was true.
oh and no freakin airbag.

CONS:
-horn has to be relocated
-cruise control for now i have nonei i have to figure out a way to re-route the cruise control "controls" heheh
-turn signal does not automaticlly click of after you turn.

there is something called a clockspring that is installed behind the steering wheel. the clock spring holds the wires and hareness that allow the accesories switch on the steering wheel work.

its hard to explain without pictures. but in words with out the clock spring i have yet to figure out a way to run wires to connect to the steering wheel. without interfeering with turning.

think of it this way. take a piece of string tape it to the console. then tape the other end of the string to the steering wheel and try to steer. there will be a point when the wires will interfere with the steering. the clock spring is the thing that allows you to steer and not hinder the steering.

Does the rest of the system still work? Does the airbag warning light stay on?

It shouldn't stay on if nothing is hooked up. Also i was looking on installation instructions for the clock spring and it shows that you can install this with the kit that i would get for the steering wheel i was looking at. Which steering wheel do you have?

i have a momo hub. w a momo steering wheel. if you are getting the grant hub then it might be different. but with the momo hub there were two bars that protruded out of the bottom that made it impossible to install with the clock spring.

and yes with out a driver airbag the light will stay on. and until i covered up that light i had to stare at it everyday when i drive. the system is missing the driver side air bag so it thinks there is a problem with the system in turn it will give you an airbag light. even if its not connected basically something is missing.

You should experiment with the plug, because all it does when it is connected is complete the circuit for two of the wires so if you can figure out wich two then the light will go off and it will think it is hooked up.

Kanagawa Nissan in Japan offer a modification list for the 5th Gens straight from the dealer. One of the options they have is a $500 Momo steering wheel with full airbag function. No word on anything for 4th Gens.

Its probably illegal

Not to burst any bubbles and sound like an old man but, I'm sure that it is illegal. Messing with the safety features of a car is most likely illegal. I have an older car (pre airbag) that I put a Grant steering wheel on. I love it but, I was pulled over one night (out of many) and the officer rattled out everything thing that was not legal on my car, including a non-standard size steering wheel.

Just an FYI. All the stuff he complained about and only gave me a repair order for my tint, not that I'm complaining....

I'm not sure about the legality, but an insurance adjustor told me to my face 'If there is any tampering with an airbag or restraint device and you're in an accident, we will not pay a dime for medical injuries'. My CRX had a Momo wheel in it when it was totaled. When she asked if it had an airbag before, I asked if it mattered and she replied with that. So I would never even think about changing the wheel out unless it is a strict track/show car. The only thing I would do is swap my ugly 96 wheel to a 97-99 SE wheel with the airbag.
