ECU reader...good to have?

Greetings Maxima scholars:

After reading a few posts about ECU computers I thought I would post this question.

I see some computer readers on ebay. Are these worth purchasing for someone like me who can do spark plugs & filters - or is it good for seriuous repairs that I couldnt do anyhow?

Thanks
and happy halloween....

I bought a scanner a few months after I bought the car, not knowing Auto Zone will scan your ECU for free. I didn't want to have to pay 40 or 50 bucks each time my CEL came on. Based on the 40 to 50 bucks per check charged by most garages, the $250 scanner has more than paid itself off. Plus friends and family save money when their lights come on and I check theirs. It comes in real handy. I guess it's up to whether or not you want to spend the money.

if you get the scanner, make sure you have a factory service manual! the generic codes the scanners throw is useless if you don't have a fsm to narrow the problem.

The Haynes manual has a section on ECU OBD-II codes and what they are. It is a real handy section, and it's more economical than the factory service manual. But it is all about preference.

You do not need a scanner to get codes for the maxima. There's a screw on the ECU that u turn. AFter you turn it the check engine light will flash and u just read the amount of time it flashes.

u don't need the scanner for the 95 max. I have a 95 max and I can get the code without the scanner. It's not really that hard to get to the ecu. It's easier than changing the oil and washing ur car. It's probably easier than filling gas in your car. Just follow the link and save urself 50 bucks.
