Gauging Interest: Hella Supertone Horns

(Update: Nov. 6, 9:32 A.M.)

Alright guys, slight mishap. The warehouse only has (4) Four of these remaining and it'll take about 2 weeks to get more in.

Which means i can't go with the 10 this time around, however i'll honor the price on the 4 remaining Hella's ($60 shipped) which i'll have by this Friday (6th).

So the confirmed parties are:
- lcf
- dilicari
- spuljack
- NyMaxedOut

If anyone of them backs out or doesn't send in payment promptly the remaining people (in order of posting) will have dibs on the slot.

I could order more of these and wait them to arrive, but i learned from the previous Injen "fiasco" where i had people waiting for well over 2 weeks before they got their stuff.

I'll be contacting the above people via e-mail or PM for payment info.

Thanks and watch out for more of "Soundmike's specials" coming in the future

Are they plug and play, or is wiring involved? I assume there's wiring involved b/c of the relay.

what kind of sound does this produce? ours is pretty wimpy, but does this sound like an 18-wheeler horn or fog horn or is there some car you can compare it too? (so I can find them on the road and **** them off until they beep at me )

I'm interested too, but Mike do you know how much the FIAMM dual-tone Highway Blasters cost? I remember them as being a little cheaper, and still sounding great?

this was asked already, but is it straight plug and play or is there any complex installation required?

i guess it would be wise for the "courtesy of" person to answer some of these Q's.

-no, it will not affect because of the rain. i've had them on for about 3 months now, in heavy rain, with no problem WHAT SO EVER.

-complex to install, no, but plug and play, NO. you do have to run a relay, but i dont' think that's complex. quick instructions now.
4 wires. 1 is ground, 1 is signal, 1 goes from battery to relay, other goes from relay to horn. the "signal" wire is really just the wire that the stock horn was using. each horn has it's own ground. with these instructions, that's pretty much all you need to install it.

-freeway blasters are nice, but yawn, you want loud, get the hellas. 140db's guys. you truly can't get louder than that. most of the NE people at the meets have heard mine and admit, they're f*cking loud. stand next to them and your ears will pop.

-so you wanna hear what they sound like. this is a quick audio clip, but it's really hard to compare. if anything, just listen to the echo.
Sound MPEG

-want more pictures of what it looks like and what the relay diagram looks like, along with what me and my dumbass friend look like...
Hella Supertone Pics

this should help you out mike. whoever gets it though, thumbs up on the choice, definitely will get you the "finger" from many people, and a few ****ed off looks. YES!!!...lata

I have the hella supertones, and I gotta say they kick A$$. They blow away any air horns out there (except trucks of course). I got mine for $62 (and I think shipping was $5). I forgot the web site, but I search for them by the hella part number.

I ran some dedicated wires for mine so that they could play at their full potential. The stock wiring on the max is inadaquate if you want them to truly perform. I used the stock wiring to trigger the relay.

Be carefull with them you can really **** people off, and thats no joke (their like a loaded gun). Possibly give someone a heart attack as well. I almost caused an accident with mine, so after that I'm more carefull with them.

You have the option...

With the relay or without the relay. The relay is provided in case you want to keep your original horns as well. You'll have the option to either honk your OEM horns, or at the flip of a switch, the Hella Horns.

If you install the horns as a replacement, then the relay is not needed. Note, OEM horns use their mounting hardware as ground. On the Hella horns, there is a positive and negative terminal. Plugin the horn to the positive terminal, and you'll have to fabricate something to connect the negative/ground terminal. Running a small wire from the negative terminal to the mounting bolt of the horn will do. So yah, its kinda sorta PNP.

This looks cool, so I may buy in. I like the idea of having a switch that allows you to change between the hella horns and the OEM horn.

A few questions:
1) Are the horns legal?
2) If you run the OEM horn with the hellas would you end up using one of each?

I'm familiar with relays, but I'm not sure of the wiring involved to run the two separate horns using a switch.

I tried looking up the specs on these horns but can't find any where that says that these are 140dB or any that say anything about dB. I have read testimonies that they are loud. I think I would like a set too!

More information here fellas...

http://www.susquehanna.com/susq/other/horns.htm
btw this is where i purchased my set...

Lemme tell ya, I've PO'd plenty of people honking at them... especially the last few weeks when honking the horn at elections signwavers.
It's enough to hurt your ears... y'know... if you should find yourself unlucky enough to have them go off while you're in front of the car.

Alright guys, slight mishap. The warehouse only has (4) Four of these remaining and it'll take about 2 weeks to get more in.

So the confirmed parties are:

I am interested if someone drops out. =)
I wonder how the mounting would be for the 4th gen? One of our horns is in the engine bay. I think it is a good idea because ppl cut my horn wires when the were trying to steal my car. They didn't know I had my VIper alarm too and that scared em off. =)

I found this site that says they are 118db:

De Nunzio.

Looks like FIAMM makes similar horns rated at 130dB.

I am very interested in these horns and willing to wait for them. Is it still just as loud if you only change one of the horns? I bought a horn at pepboys but it was a P.O.S. ALl it did was give it a dif. tone. Let me know when you get more!

I have to disagree, the stock wiring is not adaquate to supply enough current to run the horns at their full potential. They will be much louder if you run their own wires for them with the supplied relay.,

Really? wow, I just might have to do that. Really though, as it is right now w/o the relay, it is substantially louder than OEM horns. If that's the case, imagine how loud it'll be w/ the relay! hohohohoho

Thanks eric! I gots me a project this weekend! Now if I could figure out what i did w/ that relay...

Hey Mike, it seems like quite a few people, including myself, are interested in waiting. Sounds like the best way to do this, is to wait until your distributor has the horns in stock and ready to go. Once they have enough, then maybe you could come on here and offer a new group deal? Just a thought...

kewl..yep gotta come out to one of the meets. We'll have food!! I hope that is incentive enough. I dunno when the next meet is. Joel and Devin are handling things since I'm not there. But I'll be back in Dec. Just keep checking Maximage to see. How are the horns? I think the OEM ones are so whimpy.

The airhorns are a great deal, but here's what I found on legality in Texas.

§ 547.501. Audible Warning Devices

(a) A motor vehicle shall be equipped with a horn in good working condition that emits a sound audible under normal conditions at a distance of at least 200 feet.

(c) A motor vehicle operator shall use a horn to provide audible warning only when necessary to insure safe operation.

(d) A warning device, including a horn, may not emit an unreasonably loud or harsh sound or a whistle.

To those who have them: In your opinion is the horn unreasonably loud or harsh

Here's the scoop, the warehouse doesn't normally stock these apparently. So if i do a special order i'd have to pay for shipping to me which bumps up the price significantly (roughly $6 more per).

But i'll try to work things out with them and see if i can do the same deal.

I've only got 2 of the 4 people contact me so far regarding payment so there *might* be a couple of slots open if i don't hear anything from them by Monday.

I checked your link, they now charge $65 + s/h.

Summit Racing is the cheapest I've found so far at $70 shipped.
