Hey people...its me AGAIN....so i pulled the MAF..attempted to clean it, put the MAF back and started the vehicle. its been sitting for about 30 hours. It was at about 10am so it was a little cold outside. Anyway the car started promptly, reved up, the sunk to about 500rpm and started shaking and sputtering. Seems like the car is sucking in alot of air due to the loud hissing at the filter. The exhaust puts out puffs of smoke white, smelling like its rich. I cannot rev up the car by stomping on the gas, it sounds bogged and dies. If i press lightly i can get the motor up past 2000rpm. Any ideas on the white smoke?

When my stock 98 Maxima sat for a week in my garage it did the same thing that you just described when I started it. I had to try several times to start it and when it did it produced a MASSIVE amount of white smoke that filled the garage. But after a few seconds the smoke went away and the car ran normally. My guess is that the fuel sat in the lines and went bad.

What the heck is wrong with your car? Its a 2002 for christ sake, your giving Nissan reliability a bad name. If your MAF is messed up I would suggest getting a new one or one from a junkyard and putting back your stock intake setup and reseting your ECU.

Just like ericdwong should, get rid of this vehicle. It is bad karma.

Obtaining a Maxima rental car at this point and testing MAFs wouldn't be a bad idea......but please be aware that I don't condone it.

From reading alil too quickly about the white smoke, I thought it was your head gaskets going bad, but after reading the rest of it, I can say I'm not mechanically inclined enough to determine what the problem is.

I had white pillowly smoke come out of my T-bird when the head gaskets blew.

I dont condone it either just because its "shady"..and unfair for the rental place to deal with it, but unfortunately 300+ bucks isnt in my budget...or my credit card. If anyone wants to donate....chinaonnitrous1@aol.com is my pay pal account

I think SprintMax left a REAL generous donation for you when he posted the URL: http://www.californialemonlaw.info/

I say lose the car, if you get a new MAF it'll prolly happen again. There is something in your car that is casuing the MAF's to die

Well...I would condone your renting it and simply swapping it out to see if that cures all. Or hook up with another 2k2+ member here.
