Finally first mod (Injen CAI) minor annoyance

I finally installed an Injen CAI. Bought it used from an org member. I can definitely feel and hear the power. It's quite nice

There is a minor annoyance though. There is this hissing noise. I've searched the from and it seems like some hissing noise is normal. But I think mine is a bit out of "tune". The hiss doesn't go away at part throttle - when I stomp on it the hiss gets replaced by nice low tone, which I like. I wouldn't mind the hiss as long as it is somewhat consistent. When I bought the intake the filter had some dents and a bee was stuck on it. And I forgot take the bee off. Would this cause the hissing noise to be inconsistent? I am looking to buy a newer filter, probably k&n (RU-2820). What would be a good replacement for Injen filter?

The hissing sound it normal. It's the air passing through the tubes. Almost sounds like a blower under there sometimes.. You can replace it with the K&N. It should be the same size...

The hiss/whistle is normal. Do you remember how huge and restrictive the stock airbox was? That was to reduce the amount of noise it makes. By getting an aftermarket higher-flowing intake, you are going to hear some noise.

I know the noise increase. I don't mind the low "booom" sound. I like it. What bothers me is the abnormal hissing noise. I also wouldn't mind the normal hissing noise.

What I mean by abnormal is that when I cruise, say at 40mph, at part throttle. The hiss never goes away. It makes my car sound like a 10 year old car. I am wondering if this can be remedied if I change the filter with new k&n. Or is this normal?

I actually like the "Hissing" noise....kinda cool....when I am at a light accelerating, sometimes the car next to me that have their windows down will look over and wondering what that was....

Personally, I don't regrate spending $240 on my Injen intake. Its quite nice IMO.

Yea, I like it also. I picked it up used @ $160. Not a bad deal I think

I guess I'll live with it. Once all the windows are closed the hiss is not that audible anyway. It's just that there is "what if". I mean what if the filter was in perfect shape (no dings and no bee). That's why I am considering a new filter.

Does anyone have somewhat detailed pics of k&n ru-2820? I just can't seem to find any on the net.

I got my Injen CAi for $205, and it was worth it.

These noises that you keep describing are normal. I think most CAI's will make a similar hissing or whistling noise at certain rpm's, or depending on how you gas it. Personally, I like it. If you don't, I wouldn't suggest getting an aftermarket intake. You should stick with the stock one, or maybe even invest in some sound deadening material for the engine bay and firewall.

If you don't like any increase sound from you intake. The best suggestion is to get a K&N drop in filter.

It won't increase THAT much HP (Maybe not even 1HP!) but it's definitly better than the stock paper filter.

the "hissing" goes away as your drive it longer. Happened to me.. it sounds like a mini blow off valve now or certain occasions.

There is this hissing noise.
Make sure all your clamps are tight and hoses are on correctly. If they are, get used to the sound.

Re: Re: Finally first mod (Injen CAI) minor annoyance

I have a 03 maxima and a 95 maxima, i bought the Injen CAI for the 95 maxima, and damn ! Instant throttle response ! I'm pretty much settled for the Injen CAI. Companies wouldn't make an aftermarket intake that would decrease the HP of your car. Injen.com will show you they dyno sheet of the 2k2 maxima they tested on. As for now, i'm considering buying another Injen CAI for my 03 maxima.
