To ALL:TimW they stole my HIDS

Well To all the 5th gen 2k2 HID owners, get the $15 dollar kit from TimW, if he is still selling it.
My lights were stolen today nov 16, 2002 aprrox 8pm. I heard my alarm go off and i heard them pop them out. Ran downstairs, they were gone.
ANyway i never invested the 15 dollar kit initially because i moved away to school. But this thursday i came back home picked up my car and drove back to school to have for the whole weekend. BIG MISTAKE
Anyway as far as recovery, they are checking the security cameras and there were some residents who saw the assailants and the whole formal report was made. But oh well there goes all that money down the drain for me. They used the prybar via fender method to take mine out, they runined both fenders a little bit.
LESSON: GET THE BOLTS FROM TIMW, NO MATTER WHERE YOU LIVE, WHO YOU ARE,LEARN PEOPLE LEARN

Dumb question, but why bother bolting them down? Won't the thieves ruing the lights anyway if they are bolted down?

Actually as TimW pointed out himself, the bolts will only keep possible thieves from unbolting it but it will not prevent them from prying it off and breaking the tabs.

true, look at it this way though:

Without the bolts: Thieves steal the lights and make a profit on it. They gain We Lose

With the bolts: Thieves break the lights. Cannot make a profit on it. They lose We Lose

We will lose both ways, but wouldnt you rather have it so they lose too?

Tim, the bolts have really taken some tension off my mind! Even though they aren't 100% or close to it, better than the regular bolts. Thanks!

Ive got the perfect idea to mesh with TimW's security bolts to make the HIDs un-stealable. I am going to design a conformed hardened steel bracket that will go over the whole plastic assembly, I will make it like a casing that will go over the while piece so that they cant even cut through it unless they are advanced where they carry a portable plasma cutter.

I just have to CAD design this out and get a shop to make this. Im thinking these pieces cant run more than $30 for the pair.

what if they use force? won't that break the plastic part underneath? I wish there was a way to just change the plastic piece to metal. Keep us updated with this though.

Nope cause the hardened steel will cover the plastic bracket. You cannot break/cut the plastic if you cant get through the metal bracket. We talking about going through hardened steel which is no different then what they make master lock's with.

Idea and key is to make it go far down enough that they cant cut the base of the plastic bracket which would defeat the whole purpose of the reinforced metal bracket. This is where making a good design is key.

his prediction was not more than $30 for it. It's not a bad price..$30 compared to $1200+ for the HIDs

Like I said, they are not available yet. I just though about it after reading this read and figuring out the best way to make them "steal" proof.

"steel" proof..

Now that you have a line/phrase for it, you need to come out with it! Not only will you be saving us HID owners but you will also be earning some bling bling on the side.

Extra Bling Bling = MODS!

Steel Brackets

The steel brackets sound great. If they are an easy install, I'd definitely be interested!! Keep us all posted!

The thing is that these guys know the Maxima's can be broken. If you put a fix on it to keep them from taking it they won't know that. So they are gonna pry and hack until they figure it out. By that point you have destroyed the light housing and the fenders or hood.

It'll still save you money no matter how you look at it. You can't prevent people being stupid, but you can pevent a huge dent in your wallet.

Swallac2,

I disagree. If I make this cover bracket right, there is will be no way to damage the housing. Only thing he can do is scratch up the cover bracket.

Only other damage is hood and fender damage.

then maybe these brackets should come with a little sticker, "these headlights are unstealable, don't even bother!"

Any word on these new brackets? I am interested in getting a pair before something may happen. *shrug*

Are the bolts a good thing to have as well?

Let me know, thanks!

I havent decided whether I will reorder. If anyone else is interested in picking up the bolt thing, lemme know.

You should get an aftermarket alarm first.. Once they get to the bolts, all the damage is already done. They wont get a working set, but you'll still have bent fenders/hood and broken glass. Just about all these thieves know how to get around the max factory alarm without it making a peep.

HID obscurity

Wouldn't it fool thieves if you were to use a 2K/2K1/AE headlight housing with the 2K2/2K3 HID's.

I'm not sure if the above is even possible, but I think for ppl who have them here in NYC, it's only a matter of time before they catch you or you park the car in a HID-theft zone.

Just thinking, for ppl who swapped out their 2K/2K1 headlight for 2k2/2K3 HIDs, it would fool thieves to use your 2K/2K1 housing with the HID setup.

depends. Some thieves want $750 for the whole housing instead of $150 for broken ballasts and burners to go in someones Accord/Civic. in those cases, the bolts will prevent them from getting a working set of lights. Bottom line, there are no winners in any of this. Your first line of defense is where you park and a good alarm.
