Results of noise reduction project: cool beans

Early yesterday -before I did the right doors and trunk- I remembered a friend of mine (audiophile) has a dB (decibel) meter so I went to his house, borrowed it, made some baseline runs (with the two left side doors & rear floor area done already, unfortunately) then returned home & completed the job.

The trunk was a *****...many nooks, crannies, cutting and fitting and I ran out of the stuff before I could completely cover the spare tire well...did the sides of the well but not the bottom nor could I do the parcel shelf

In the end, over the same road & same speed the car is 1.1 dB quieter after the Brown Bread and recall, I had already done the left doors & rear floor/underseat area so I'm guessing a 1.5 to 1.8 dB reduction..certainly noticeable. Big thumps (ala lane dots) seem more muted, certainly the doors close much more solidly. Only downside is I hurt all over from spending two hours inside the trunk...

Will order another quarter-roll and do the rest (parcel shelf, front floor pan, etc) next month..

I need to do this, but I'm worried about the weight addition.

Tanman, not to worry...I added 20 lbs to the

car, that's all. This stuff is pretty light weight...the whole roll including shipping tube/package was 22 lbs.

I would love to do this as well, but the whole weight thing is holding me back, even if it's only 20 lbs...

Unless you meticulously watch the level of the fuel in your car and never fill more than the typical track level of 1/8-1/4 tank, the weight difference is miniscule. I find it hard to believe anyone 'fills' up every day or so to keep a partial load of gas in the car at a given level.

Remember, gasoline weighs about 6 lbs per gallon...so if you are off by just 3 or so gallons of gas from this imagined 'base line', you have already covered the difference of this matting product.

your project sounds really cool...how much was the material, and how hard was it to do?

No, paranoid would be having liposuction, or some other weight loss procedure performed to offset the matting!!

Hah..that stuff looks like Peel-N-Seal (Lowes Hardware). You can get 25 square feet for 10 bucks. Its what I dynamatted my trunk with. I found out about it from some folks on soundomain and here at the .org.

Just my 2 cents. Its a much more realistic project when its only 10 bucks a roll.

Peel and Seal

How's the Peel and Seel working?
How noticeable is the reduction in noise?
How much would be required for a good project?
Thanks,

Peel & Seal, huh? Hmnnn..will definitely

take a look at it 'cause I agree..that's cheap!
Does the Peel & Seal have the aluminized layer on one side? If not..it's not the same because the Brown Bread does have an aluminum foil on the non-stick side...

The peel-n-seal mastic stuff has aluminum on one side.... I do notice the SPL is better with the peel-n-seal. My basslink is hardly noticeable outside the car with the stuff. I took the spare out and did the entire trunk with it prior to installing my basslink. With my seats down, it can acutally cause pain (a single 10"). Of course...I could just be getting old.

For the price, I don't think its all that bad. Only part about it I didn't like was it wasn't very wide (8 inch). Other than that, I think the stuff is the same as every other mastic.

Good luck.

Nice work. I actually think the 8" width

could make it easier to install since many areas you have to cut to smaller than that to get it to fit/sit well...so thanks again.
