Am I doomed with my heavy wheels
I always knew I had heavy wheels. Recently found out my 17" ASA KA3's weigh 23.5 lbs each!! Add my 950's and I am at 45 lbs.
I have been to the track once, and am too embaressed to post what my ET was. I was only able to pull a 2.28 60', which was probably due to my lack of expierence.
How much of the 1/4 mile are heavy wheels effecting me? Just the 60 foot? All the way to 1/8 mile? Is there any point to continue moding untill I get lighter wheels? Are there 5-speed 4th gens getting mid 14 sec 1/4 miles with heavy wheels?
Also.
I am a little encouraged by the fact that I had my shift points backwards. I was shifting at 6200 1-2, 6500 2-3. Finishing in 3rd. I should have shifted 6500 1-2, 6200 2-3. I did correct my shifting error on the last run. The last run(with the correct shift points) I was able to match my best run(with incorrect shift points) even though I missed 3rd gear and finished in 5th. This tells me my shift points were my real problem maybe not my wheels???
I am driving a 96 I30t 5-speed. Only had an intake at the time. Any input?

I found that going to a heavy 17" wheels setup to a 15" steel setup dropped my time from 14.7 to 14.5 without any other changes.
I purchased (and have for sale!) a light set of rims (16" 300zx) with drag radials for track use. Just swap 'em on when you go to the track.
Mike, your wheels are actually not that heavy for 17's. The set of 15" aftermarket alloys (not stock) that came on my car were 41 lbs.
I found that in changing from a 36lb (light) wheel/tire combo to a 30lb (really really light) wheel/tire combo I gained about .1s and 1mph. So let say you got a 36lb combo, you are probably looking at a similar improvement. I think it was your shifting strategy that was holding you back. You've probably got .3 seconds hiding in just that. We'll head to the track in the spring and I bet you run much much better.

So you think my main problem was just my backwards shifing strategy. You were actually the one who corrected me on my shift points. I only got one run after you informed me but I missed 3rd
My best run with fuked up shifting was just about equal to my run with missing a gear and shifting correctly. I had a .2 sec advantage at the 330' with a 6500 1-2 shift.
I really do not want to drop more money on wheels and tires.
Check your PM's later tonight concerning my brake set up for the race track this summer. I will have to upgrade before I do any hot laps.
later, I got some one-piece cefiro headlights to install tonight

I would put on the stockers if I had not sold them.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I think your 17" combo weighs more than 45lbs. I weighed my brand new 17" ASA LS5 rims with 235/45 Sumitomo HTR+s. Total weight was 42lbs. The LS5s weigh 17lbs which means my tires weigh ~25lbs which is normal for a 235/45. Have you weighed your wheel combo? Because I believe the 950s weigh 25-27lbs in the 225-235/45 sizes and team that with a ~24lb wheel and you're looking at a 49-51lb wheel combo.

Your right, I checked into my combo weight a little more. I got the 45lb combo weight from weighing them on my bathroom ditgital scale. I actually got 45.5lbs. Not the most scientific method.
Looked up the specs on my 950's. 29lbs for the 235/45 R17!!! Which give me a grand total of 52.5 lbs. That sucks!!
Now my stock set up was The forged touring BBS 15" wheels with Turanza 205/60 R15 which weigh 20 lbs each. I had the combo weighed by a postal scale for shipping purposes and they were at 34lbs. So my stock BBS wheels were 14lbs each.
This is not good. 52.5 lbs, that has to be hurting me. I should have never sold my stock wheels. It was one of those things I did before I knew much about unsprung weight. I did fetch a hell of a price for them on Ebay though. Which ultimately paid for my new rims.
